CAMBRIDGE, Mass - University of Maine senior Riley Masters (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and University at Albany sophomore Kathryn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) turned in standout performances paving the way for America East Performer of the Week honors.
Masters, the 2010 America East champion, bolted his way to a first-place finish at the Minuteman Invitational hosted by UMass over the weekend. The senior harrier cruised through the 8K course with a time of 21:24.75, which breaks down to 4:16 per mile. Masters crossed the finish line nearly five seconds faster than the second-place runner.
Fanning ran the Great Dane women to a fourth place finish at Iona's Meet of Champions in the Bronx, N.Y. The sophomore clocked in with a time of 22:33.36, good for fourth place overall among 202 racers. It is her second top-five finish on the young season after she won the Monmouth Kick-Off Classic on Sept. 3.
Albany competed at the 17th Annual Iona’s Meet of Champions on Sept. 17 earning third place among 19 scoring men’s teams and fourth among 19 women's teams. Kathryn Fanning led the Albany women finishing fourth overall in 22:33.36. There would be a large gap before the next Great Dane finisher as junior Emily Finnegan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie Central) came in 17th at 23:07.00. The men’s squad had four top-20 finishers led by junior Ethan Clary (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville Central) who ran the 8K course in 25:25.18, good for seventh place. Despite the solid finish, the Great Dane men fell to No. 11 in the USTFCCA Northeast regional rankings.
Binghamton's cross country teams had this week off and will not run again until Sept. 30 at the Lehigh Paul Short Run.
Boston U. did not compete this week but will run at the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park on Saturday, Sept. 24. The idle Terrier men dropped to No. 7 in the regional rankings and the women also fell one place to No. 11.
Hartford next competes at the Ted Owen Invitational on Sept. 24.
Riley Masters and Jennifer Lucy (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led the Maine cross country teams this weekend at the Minuteman Invitational. Masters won the men's race dominating the course in 21:24.75, while Lucy placed 12th in the women's 5K checking in with a time of 18:28.25. The Black Bears are next in action when they host New Hampshire in a dual meet on Sept. 23.
UMBC ran against some stiff competition at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., over the weekend. On the men’s side, senior Sam Boimov (Montgomery Village, Md./Montgomery/Salisbury) placed 33rd overall to lead the Retrievers across the line in 25:15.31. The Retriever men dropped one spot to No. 13 in the Mid-Athlantic regional rankings. Senior Keri Wilson (Columbia, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) also placed 33rd to pace the Retriever women. UMBC returns to action at the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Sept. 30.
New Hampshire had the week off and will travel to Orono, Maine on Sept. 23 for a race against the Black Bears. The women's squad also jumped a spot to No. 9 in the regional rankings.
Stony Brook did not compete this week and returns to the course on Sept. 24 at the Ted Owen Invitational. The Seawolf women stood pat at No. 6 in the Northeast regional rankings.
The University of Vermont teams ran at the Minuteman Invitational on Saturday, with the men earning third place and the women second. Sophomore Aaron Szotka (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) led all Catamounts in the men's race, posting a time of 22:46.81 to finish sixth overall. The women's team was led by junior Kirsten Weberg, who paced the Catamounts in the 5K by finishing eighth overall in a time of 18:16.14. The second place finish kept the Cats in the regional rankings at No. 15. UVM will not compete again until it joins Binghamton and UMBC at the Paul Short Run on Sept. 30.
