CAMBRIDGE, Mass - After a weekend that saw America East men's soccer teams go 8-2-1, a trio of standouts have earned weekly honors. UMBC's Sean Rothe (Dundalk, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Vermont's David Ramada (Essex, Vt./Essex) earned Co-Player of the Week accolades while New Hampshire's Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) received Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards for the week ending Sept. 18 were announced Monday afternoon.
Rothe recorded a five-point game and nearly led UMBC to an upset win of top-ranked Maryland last week. The senior midfielder scored twice and had an assist against the Terrapins, setting up Pete Caringi’s goal that tied the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute then scoring twice in a 71-second span (‘82, ‘83) to force overtime. Rothe, who tallied five points despite filling in at back, is now tied for fifth among league leaders with five points.
Ramada didn’t allow a goal and made seven saves in a pair of 1-0 wins for the Catamounts last week. The junior goalkeeper, who has allowed just one goal all season, made three stops in Vermont’s win over Siena on Friday and followed up with four saves in a win over Harvard on Sunday. Ramada, who entered the season with just three career shutouts, has a league-high five already this season to go with a 0.17 GAA and a .958 save percentage. UVM is now a league-best 5-1-1 on the season.
Worra earned his first career shutout in New Hampshire’s 1-0 win over Adelphi Friday, which snapped the team’s four-game losing skid. The freshman keeper tied a career high with five saves, all in the second half, to pick up his second career win. Worra, a native of Lancaster, Pa., ranks fourth among league leaders averaging 3.80 saves per game.
In addition to UNH and Vermont picking up wins over the weekend, Albany extended its win streak to four games by winning the Binghamton Classic. Senior Anthony DeSalvo scored in wins over Central Conn. State and Rider to earn MVP honors. Binghamton and Boston U. split two games, with the Bearcats beating Rider and the Terriers beating UMass. Boston U.'s win was the 300th of head coach Neil Roberts' career. Stony Brook also picked up a 2-1 comeback win over Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday while Hartford deadlocked 15th-ranked Penn State, 0-0.

Albany (4-2-0) won the Binghamton Classic title by taking a pair of matches against Rider on Friday, Sept. 16 and Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Sept. 18 ... The Great Danes are now riding a four-game winning streak ... The last time UAlbany won four consecutive matches was in the 2008 season when the team did it twice to tally a 12-4-2 record and receive the number two seed in the America East Conference tournament ... Senior midfielder Anthony DeSalvo (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) netted two goals this weekend, one vs. Rider and one vs. CCSU ... DeSalvo was also named MVP of the Binghamton Classic ... Junior forward Quintel Gates (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore) tallied a goal and three assists on the weekend ... Gates now has a point in five straight matches and 13 points total on the season (5G, 3A) ... Junior midfielder Jeff Pierre (North Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Fla.) and freshman Brandon Wilson (Troy, N.Y./Troy) each scored a goal this weekend ... Wilson's goal in the 53rd minute vs. CCSU was not only his first of the season but the game-winner as well ... Senior goalkeeper Adrian Foncette (Arima, Trinidad/ Fatima) recorded his first shutout of the season and ninth of his career vs. CCSU ... DeSalvo, Gates, Foncette, and senior defender David Pinto (Valley Stream, N.Y./ Valley Stream) were all named to the Binghamton Classic All-Tournament team ... The Great Danes continue the 2011 season on the road vs. Towson on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 pm at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Binghamton (3-3-0) hosted its first-ever in-season tournament since moving into the Bearcats Sports Complex four years ago ... senior midfielder Ryan Walter (Snyder, N.Y./Nichols) and junior midfielder Trey Jasenski (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohanessan) were named to the Binghamton All-Tournament Team. Walter scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute against Rider on Sept. 18. He now has three career game-winning goals, all of which have come at the Bearcats Sports Complex ... sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (Ontario, Canada/Regina Catholic) recorded his first career shutout in the Bearcats win over Rider. He recorded three saves in the process ... the goal by Walter is the latest game winner netted by Binghamton in regulation since Matt Kristek scored with just 21 seconds left in the second half in the Bearcats' 2-1 win at Vermont on Oct. 24, 2009.
Boston University (2-4-0) split its two games this past weekend, dropping a 1-0 decision against No. 1 Connecticut before earning a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Massachusetts ... The Terriers and Huskies battled throughout before UConn broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 79th minute ... The loss marked the Terriers' fourth in a row ... Boston U. snapped the losing streak by scoring two goals in the final 18 minutes to beat UMass ... The Minutemen scored first in the 14th minute and held the Terriers to just one shot attempt the rest of the half ... Boston U. rallied back with goals by redshirt freshman James Holler (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) at 72:18 and freshman Cameron Souri (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt) at 85:55 ... The victory was the program's first over UMass since 2005 after going 0-3-3 in the last six meetings ... The win also marked 27th-year head coach Neil Roberts' 300th victory ... He became the 34th with at least 10 years at the NCAA Division I level to reach the milestone ... He is only one of 11 from that group to earn his first 300 at the same institution ... The Terriers will continue the four-game road trip with a visit to No. 22 Brown on Friday (Sept. 23) at 7 p.m.
Hartford (1-5-1) went 0-1-1 on the week, dropping a 4-3 decision at Quinnipiac on Wednesday before battling #15 Penn State to a 0-0 stalemate at home on Sunday ... Against the Bobcats, the Hawks overcame a two-goal deficit to take the lead ... Quinnipiac went on to close out the match with two-straight scores, the game winner coming with just 63 seconds remaining in regulation ... All three of Hartford's goals came wtihin a span of eight minutes as James Stamopoulos (Mississaugua, Ontario/Port Credit Secondary), Atobra Ampadu (Accra, Ghana/The Hotchkiss School) and Rohan Roye (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College) found the back of the net, twice in the 53rd minute and again in the 61st minute ... With the setback in Hamden, the Hawks have not picked up a road win in 25 attempts, going 0-24-1 ... Hartford's last win away from West Hartford came at Albany on October 3, 2009 ... On Sunday against Penn State, the Hawks snapped a five-game losing skid with the tie and managed to keep the Nittany Lions scoreless for the first time this season ... The draw was the first for Hartford since 2009 when it battled Stony Brook to a scoreless draw in the semifinal round of the America East Tournament ... Keeper Luke Citriniti (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) came up with five saves, a season-best, and posted his second shutout of the year in the draw ... Before a record, exuberant crowd of 2,513 and a television audience, UMBC (2-1-2) put forth a tremendous effort before falling, 4-3, in double overtime to top-ranked Maryland in an intrastate battle played at Retriever Soccer Park on Sept. 13... Maryland improved to 6-0-0 with the victory, while UMBC (2-1-2) saw its unbeaten streak halted at 12, dating back to Oct. 15 of the 2010 campaign... Rothe missed the 2010 campaign due to a knee injury and had shifted from right midfield to right back in the Maryland game in the absence of Daniel Welsh (Fife, Scotland/Melville College) ... Recorded primary assist on back-heel pass to Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall), who tied the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute... Then scored two goals, 71 seconds apart to erase a 3-1 deficit and draw UMBC even with 6:17 remaining in regulation... His first goal was a 27-yard bomb into the upper right corner of the net... Rothe had three goals and eight total points in his previous 61 games as a Retriever... With 30 seconds left in the first overtime period, Maryland was awarded a penalty kick, but Retriever netminder Dan Louisignau (Wilmington, Del./Concord/U. Virginia) made the save on John Stertzer’s attempt... Louisignau made a career-high tying nine saves for the third consecutive game... Senior forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) became the first player in school history to record 30 assists with his secondary helper on Caringi's goal... The Retrievers lost for the first time at home in the month of September since 2007... The contest vs. Maryland was their 100th game at Retriever Soccer Park and the record now stands at 66-16-18 (750)...UMBC has eight days off before playing the first road game of the season, at Loyola on Sept. 21.

Sophomore midfielder Steven Palumbo (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional) scored a game-winning goal late in the second frame to lift the 'Cats to victory ... Brad Hilton (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) was credited with an assist on the play ... Goalkeeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) tied a career high with five saves in his first collegiate shutout ... David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led UNH with four shots, while Charlie Roche (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), Ryan McNabb (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Palumbo all tallied two shots apiece ... The Wildcats are back in action when they return home to host the 22nd Annual Nike Fall Classic, opening the tournament against Air Force Friday, Sept. 23 (7 p.m.) at Bremner Field.
Stony Brook (2-3-2) split its games last week to move to 2-3-2 on the season ... the Seawolves' home opener was a 1-0 loss to Sacred Heart, but the team rebounded to knock off Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 ... the victory was a comeback win after the team fell behind 1-0 in the second half ... junior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) provided the ignition with a penalty kick goal a mere three minutes after Fairleigh Dickinson had scored...he was Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game in the win ... junior Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) then helped give the Seawolves the victory by taking a pass from junior Leonardo Fernandes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and slicing it left to right past a diving FDU goalkeeper for the game-winning goal ... it was Abreu's second goal of the season, which leads the team...the Seawolves tightened up on defense in the second half, allowing only one shot on goal and very few chances, especially after taking the 2-1 lead...the defense was led by senior Kyle McTurk (Hauppauge, N.Y.) ... Stony Brook is home against Fairfield Tuesday before hitting the road to play a pair of Philadelphia teams (Penn and Temple) this weekend.
Vermont (5-1-0) went 2-0 on the week and has won three straight after picking up matching 1-0 victories over Siena and Harvard to close out a four-game homestand ... Freshman Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa. / Peter's Township) came off the bench to start the second half, making his first appearance on the Centennial Field pitch, and scored his first career, the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute to lift UVM past Siena ... UVM improved to 9-1 against the Saints in the all-time series and Sheirer was the fourth Catamount to score this season ... Against Harvard, senior Yannick Lewis (Toronto, Ontario / Bramalea Secondary) scored his third goal of the year in the 85th minute to propel the Catamounts past the Crimson and snap a three-game losing streak to Harvard in the all-time series ... Lewis entered his senior season with five career goals, he has three in 2011, all via the header ... Dave Ramada (Essex, Vt./Essext) made a total of seven stops in net to post back-to-back shutouts ... He entered his junior season with three clean sheets in his career and has five in 2011 alone ... The UVM defense, which ranks seventh nationally, has allowed just one goal on the season ... Vermont returns to action on September 23 and 25 when the Catamounts head to the west coast to compete in the Stanford Nike Classic ... UVM faces California in the first game on Friday (Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m. EST) and takes on the hosts, Stanford, in the second day (4 p.m. EST) ... The Catamounts opened the 2010 season defeating No. 13 Stanford at Centennial Field.
