Strom, Quinlan, Miller Tabbed Women's Soccer Weekly Award Winners

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A trio of players from the top two teams in the America East standings have earned women's soccer weekly honors for the final full week of non-conference play. Kylie Strom (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) helped Boston University improve to 7-2-1 to earn Co-Player of the Week honors while Hartford's Erin Quinlan ((Saugus, Mass./The Governors Academy/Syracuse) kept her team unbeaten at 7-0-1 by pitching two shutouts and also picked up Co-Player of the Week accolades. The Terriers' Kai Miller (Carpinteria, Calif./Santa Barbara) earned Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 18.

In two contests last week, Strom tallied her first career multi-goal game and assisted on a game-winning score in leading Boston U. to two wins last week. Strom scored goals in the 23rd and 31 minutes of a 3-0 win over Harvard Wednesday then setup the game winner in a 3-1 victory over Yale on Sunday. The sophomore midfielder is tied for the league lead with four goals and ranks second with nine points.

Quinlan made eight stops in a pair of shutout victories last week and extended her scoreless streak to 649 minutes. The junior goalkeeper who earned Defensive MVP honors of Marist’s Tournament, made four saves in Hartford’s 1-0 win over Lafayette Friday and four more in a 2-0 victory over Cornell Sunday. A transfer from Syracuse, Quinlan has allowed just one goal in eight games this season and leads the league in goals-against average (0.13), save percentage (.968) and shutouts (6).

Miller scored her first career goal as a collegian in Boston U.’s 3-0 win over Harvard on Wednesday. The freshman back/midfielder found the back of the net in the 58th minute after taking a pass from Jessica Luscinski and chipping it over the goalkeeper. Miller come off the bench in all 10 of Boston U.’s game this season and has contributed to a defense that has allowed just 0.80 goals per game.

After a handful of non-league games take place during the week, conference play commences on Sunday. Maine will host Binghamton while Boston U. visits Albany in a rematch of an America East Championship semifinal match from a year ago. Elsewhere UMBC hosts Hartford and Vermont entertains Stony Brook.

Albany (2-5-0)
fell to Central Connecticut State, 3-2, in overtime, in the Great Danes’ only game of the week ... Aubrey VanGorder (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and Shayla Bergeron (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) scored Albany’s two goals ... VanGorder was assisted by Katie Grant (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Auburn Drive) on her tally ... The two forwards combined for nine of UAlbany’s 12 shots in the game... Dani Britt (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) played the entire game in the net for the Great Danes, making six saves ... Albany will return to action on Wednesday at Manhattan for a 7 p.m. contest, and will kick off America East Conference play on Sunday, hosting Boston U. at Varsity Field at 2 p.m. ... The Terriers beat the Great Danes, 2-0, in the America East Championship semifinals last October.

Binghamton (3-5-0) lost its only game of the week, a 1-0 setback at Cornell in the team’s final non-conference game of the season. In that game, the Big Red scored the game-winner just 1:35 into the second half and outshot the Bearcats 17-7 ... Binghamton will have had an 11-day layoff before opening America East play at Maine on Sunday ... The Bearcats are trying to shake an offensive slow down that has seen the team net just two goals in its last five games. All five of the team’s defeats have been by a narrow 1-0 margin, including two overtime losses. Binghamton’s back line has yielded just five goals in eight games (0.60) ... The Bearcats own a modest three-game unbeaten streak against Maine (2-0-1), having posted 1-0 wins in each of the last two seasons plus a scoreless draw in the 2009 tournament quafterfinals ... Binghamton is 6-3-2 all-time against the Black Bears.

Boston University (7-2-1) bounced back with a pair of wins over Harvard, 3-0, and Yale, 3-1, last weekend ... Sophomore Kylie Strom (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) scored two goals and added an assist in two games, while senior Brittany Heist (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) found the back of the net twice against Yale ... Against Harvard, Boston U. snapped a two-game losing skid as Strom recorded her first-ever multiple-goal game with back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 31st minutes, respectively ... Freshman Kai Miller (Carpinteria, Calif./Santa Barbara) scored her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute ... On Sunday, Boston U. gained more momentum with a 3-1 win over Yale ... Heist scored early in the contest at 10:14 and then put away the game winner at 62:42 on a beautiful header off a Strom corner kick ... After opening the season with a 1-1 stalemate against ODU, Hartford (7-0-1) has rattled off seven straight wins, six of them shutouts ... this past week saw a pair of victories at the Marist Tournament with a 1-0 win over Lafayette on Friday and a 2-0 win over Cornell on Sunday ... junior Amelia Pereira (Madeira, Portugal/Escola da APEL) led the offense throughout the week with two goals, one of which was the game winner against Lafayette ... she then added an insurance goal against Cornell in the 70th minute ... Pereira is now tied with fellow classmate Caitlin Alves (Ludlow, Mass./The Williston Northampton School) for the team lead in goals with four, while she leads the team with 12 points total adding four assists ... New Hampshire (1-6-1)
finished its most recent week of action 0-1-1 ... Last time out the Wildcats played Bryant University to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Sept. 18 at Bulldog Stadium ... Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Correa (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) registered seven saves, earning her second shutout of the season in the contest ... New Hampshire outshot Bryant 3-1 in the second overtime, putting two shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net in the closing moments of the contest ... Both teams registered four shots combined in both overtimes, but the Bulldogs held a slight 20-19 edge in shots for the game ... In the game prior, Correa registered a season-high nine saves, but a late goal was too much to overcome, as the Wildcats fell to Brown University, 1-0, on Sept. 15 ... Brown outshot UNH 12-4, including a 9-2 edge in the first frame ... Shots were nearly even in the second half, as the Brown Bears held a 3-2 edge over the Wildcats ... Stony Brook (2-7-0) posted a 1-1 record last week with a come-from-behind win at Fairfield on Sunday and a loss to Army on Friday ... sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) made five saves in each game ... on Friday, the Black Knights scored both goals in the second half for a 2-0 win over host Stony Brook ... the Seawolves bounced back with a 2-1 victory at Fairfield on Sunday as junior Sa’sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute and senior Rachel Silverman (Rye Brook, N.Y./Rye Brook) scored her first goal of the season to win it in the 54th minute ... Fairfield had initially gone in front in the 24th, but Stony Brook battled back for its second comeback win of the year after rallying against Iona in the season opener ... The goal was Silverman’s first career game-winner and second in her collegiate career ... Stony Brook’s victory on Sunday snapped a seven-game losing streak ... the Seawolves will open conference play this week when they travel to Burlington, Vt. on Sunday to take on the Catamounts at 1 p.m.

Vermont (2-4-2)
fell 2-1 at Yale in the lone game of the week for the Catamounts, who were playing their third straight Ivy League opponent ... Alexa DeMaio (Yardley, Pa. / The Pennington School) scored her first career goal to tie the game up, but the Bulldogs scored the game-winner in the 74th minute to pick up the victory ... DeMaio is the seventh different Catamount to score a goal this season ... UVM closes out a six-game road swing with games at Siena (Sept. 20) and Holy Cross (Sept. 23) this week, before hosting Stony Brook (Sept. 25) in the league opener ... It will be UVM’s first home game in 23 days.
