CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- University of Maine senior forward Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School), America East's active career scoring leader, inked her name in the Black Bears' record books this past week and earned the conference's Player of the Week accolade for the period ending September 18. Fairfield University freshman back Felicitas Heinen (Munich, Germany/Miller Gymnasium) earned the Rookie of the Week award this week.
Newton helped the Black Bears extend their winning streak to eight games with 10 points in two wins last week. The senior forward tallied three goals on five shots along with four assists, and became the program's all-time career leader in goals scored.
Newton's first goal in a 5-0 win over Providence on Friday broke the school record, her 48th career goal. She scored twice more to bring her career total to an even 50, and added two assists to round out an eight-point afternoon.
On Saturday in a 4-1 win over Michigan State, Newton dished out two assists. She now has 15 helpers on the season, more than twice more than the next America East player, tying the program record for single-season assists as well as career assists (39).
Heinen scored the game-winning goal against Lehigh on Saturday to help the Stags improve to 5-2 on the season. The freshman defender led the team with eight shots for the game, including five of the team's nine shots on goal. Heinen, a defender, also helped shutout Lehigh in a 2-0 win, not allowing a Mountain Hawk shot in the first half.
The freshman is second for the Stags this season with nine points on three goals and three assists.

No. 16 University at Albany (5-3 overall, 0-0 America East) went 1-1 over the weekend in a home match with Davidson and a road game in Hempstead, N.Y. versus Hofstra... The Great Danes' penalty corner technique was on par in the game with Davidson as they scored all three goals in a 3-0 victory off the penalty corner... Albany scored early, in what would be the game winner, when Taylor Luke (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) scored her first goal of the season with a hard shot just inside the circle, with assists from Christina Patrick (Reading, Pa./Reading Catholic) and Karlijn van Dijsseldonk (Eindhoven, Netherlands/Sondervick College)... Daphne Voormolen (Rotterdam, Netherlands/Erasmiaans Gymnasium) and Corrine McConville (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) would also register goals in the win... McConville leads Albany with seven goals and two assists... Goalkeeper Kristi Troch (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) made five saves for her second shutout of the season... At Hofstra, the Great Danes tied up the game early in the second stanza with a goal from Voormolen, but the Pride scored in the 68th minute to give the Great Danes their third loss of the season... Albany continues its six-game road trip on Wednesday (Sept. 21) at Siena followed by a weekend in Easton, Pa. with matches featuring Monmouth and Lafayette.
No. 14 Boston University (4-3, 0-0 AE) split its two games over the weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., posting a 8-0 shutout of Ball State on Friday before falling, 3-1, to No. 13 Michigan on Sunday... Seven different Terriers found the back of the cage in the rout against the Cardinals... The offensive output was the most by the Terriers since an 8-3 win at Dartmouth on Sept. 16, 2007, and it was the most decisive Boston U. victory since a 9-0 home decision over UMBC on Oct. 7, 2006... Junior Macey Gaumond (Warren, Mass./Quaboag) scored two goals within a span of 29 seconds against the Cardinals to push her team-leading goal total to six... Senior Andrea Greene (Santiago, Chile/Universidad Diego Portales) recorded a goal in each game... Junior Nicole van Oosterom (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Chilton Saint James School) registered a goal and two assists on Friday... Sophomore Kat Spring (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) earned an assist in each contest... Freshman Valentina Cerda (Santiago, Chile/Deutsche Schule Santiago) and senior Julie Collins (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) combined for the shutout on Friday and Cerda recorded a career-best eight saves in Sunday's contest against the Wolverines... The Terriers will continue their current road stretch with games at Massachusetts (Sept. 23) and Syracuse (Sept. 25) next weekend.
Fairfield (5-2, 0-0 AE) won its only game of the week, a 2-0 decision at Lehigh on Saturday... Caitlin O'Donnell secured her second shutout of the season and lowered her GAA to 0.57 with a .857 save percentage. She has not allowed a goal in three of her four appearances this season... Senior Marit Westenberg picked up an assist against Lehigh, giving her a point in six of her seven appearances this season. She leads the team with 13 points, recording five goals and three assists...Fairfield brings a three-game winning streak into this week's action. The team will look to equal last year's four-game win streak, the longest since winning six consecutive contests in 2000... The Stags will host Sacred Heart University on September 21 before returning to the road for a September 23 game with Holy Cross.
Maine (8-1, 0-0 AE) picked up a pair of wins, shutting out Providence, 5-0, on Friday before downing Michigan State, 4-1, on Saturday... The two wins push Maine's winning streak to eight games... Player of the Week Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied her fifth career hat-trick to go along with two assists in the win over Providence, giving her eight points on the day... Newton's first goal against Providence gave her 48 in her career, which is a new school record for goals in a career. Newton broke Janet Hoskin's career goals record of 47 which she notched from 1978-81... With points in each of Maine's two wins over the weekend, Newton now has a point in her last 16 games dating back to Oct. 10, 2010... The shutout over Providence was Maine's third straight and the second straight for Black Bear goalkeeper Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia)... In the win over Michigan State, Newton tallied a pair of assists and has now tied the school record for assists in a season (15) and assists in a career (39)... Michigan State tallied the first goal of the game at the 5:52 mark which snapped Maine's minute streak at 260:55 straight minutes without allowing a goal... Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied her tenth goal of the season on Saturday, giving her 10 or more goals in her last three seasons... The Black Bear attack continues to top the nation as it is averaging 5.22 goals per game... Maine continues non-conference road action as it travels to Quinnipiac to meet Lehigh in a neutral site game on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. before battling host Quinnipiac on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
No. 10 UNH (8-0, 0-0 AE) remained unbeaten with shutout victories last weekend against both Holy Cross (5-0) and 20th-ranked Northeastern (4-0) in which the Wildcats outshot the opposition 33-10 and seven different players scored a goal… The ‘Cats had not shut out consecutive opponents since October 2007… Hayley Rausch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) became the fourth UNH Wildcat to reach the 100-point milestone with the second of her two goals vs. Holy Cross on Sept. 16. Rausch currently ranks #3 on UNH’s career leaderboard in both assists (27) and points (105) as well as #6 in goals (39)… Emma Erler (New Hampton, N.H./Newfound Regional) factored in five of the team’s nine goals last weekend as she recorded career highs in both assists (two) and points (four) vs. Holy Cross and then matched that assist total vs. NU… Erler now leads the team in assists (six)… Kendall Deck (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) has 20 career points, all on assists, after recording an assist vs. both HC and NU… Katherine Nagengast (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) has stopped 30 of 36 shots this season for a .833 save percentage with a 0.86 GAA… Rausch has recorded a point every game and scored a goal in 7 of 8… Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union) has recorded a point in 7 of 8 and ranks second on the team in goals, assists and points… Kellie Joyce (South Pomfret, Vt./Kimball Union) scored her first career goal vs. HC… UNH has outscored the opposition 35-6, including 22-2 in the first half.
Vermont (4-4, 0-0 AE) dropped its only two games of the week, with both losses coming on the road… The Catamounts fell to Monmouth on Saturday, 4-2… Sophomore Colleen Slaughter (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) scored both of Vermont’s goals in her home state. Slaughter now has a team-high five goals on the year… The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Catamounts, which matched the second-longest in program history… Freshman Ashley Brown (Hartford, Vt./Hartford) assisted on Slaughter’s second goal for her first career point in a Catamount uniform… On Sunday Vermont fell at Lafayette, 2-0… Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Zygmunt (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made 12 stops for the Catamounts… Vermont returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Siena starting at 1 p.m.
