CAMBRIDGE, Mass . -- Ten standout student-athletes, including eight repeat selections and five all-conference performers, were named to the 2011 America East Men’s Lacrosse All-Academic Team, which was released by the conference office this afternoon. These student-athletes, who excel both academically as well as athletically, represent the best of the America East Conference.

Stony Brook University’s Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster), the reigning America East Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete, earned his third straight All-Academic honor along with teammate Timmy Trenkle (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Binghamton University’s Derrick Danieu (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) to highlight the squad. The trio also earned all-conference recognition as did University of Hartford’s Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Univ. of Western Ontario) and Stony Brook’s Robbie Campbell (Delta, B.C./Seaquam), who are among the eight repeat choices.

In addition to Campbell and Genik, University at Albany’s Kyle Crotty (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Hartford’s Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and University of Vermont’s Matt Jankow (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown HS West) also earned All-Academic honors in 2010.

Sophomores Neill Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) from UMBC and A.J. Masson (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Andrew’s College) from Vermont rounded out the 2011 All-Academic squad.

The All-Academic teams are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Directors meeting where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference’s nine member institutions decided to honor the league’s top student-athletes, who excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.

For the third straight year, the America East All-Academic teams were chosen using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time (e.g., 10 on the field for men’s lacrosse) but can be more if there is a tie in voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
