CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Four student-athletes posted wins at their respective meets while also setting personal-best and/or conference-leading marks on their way to earning weekly honors. On the men’s side, Binghamton University senior Cazal Arnett (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) garnered Track Performer of the Week distinction, while University at Albany senior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, Puerto Rico/Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) earned Field Performer of the Week honors. For the women, Boston University junior Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) received the Track Performer of the Week nod and University of Vermont freshman Nika Ouellette (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) took Field Performer of the Week accolades.
Arnett won the men’s 400-meter dash and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team at the Cornell Upstate Challenge. Arnett, the defending America East outdoor champion in the 400 meters, registered a first-place time of 48.03, his best time this spring. He then anchored the 4x400 relay to a facility-record mark of 3:11.82. The relay time is tops in America East this spring.
De Jesus Elias led Albany to a 105-89 dual-meet victory over Connecticut, the region’s second-ranked team. The senior earned a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 202’. The mark set a meet record in the second edition of the dual meet and improved de Jesus Elias’ IC4A-qualifying distance.
Matthews set a school record in the 5,000-meter run as she won the event at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton. She recorded a time of 16:01.16 and broke Marisa Ryan’s three-year-old mark (16:02.95). The junior’s time is the top time this conference in the outdoor season.
Ouellette led the Catamounts at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J., winning the women’s javelin for the fourth time this season. The freshman threw a season-best 45.44 meters. That mark tops America East performances this spring.
The University at Albany men won the second “Dogfight” meet with a 105-89 victory over Connecticut, the region’s second-ranked team, at University Field. The Albany men are ranked No. 7 in the Northeast region. UConn captured last year’s inaugural dual competition. Senior Alie Beauvais (Hempstead, N.Y./Hempstead) won the 400-meter dash (48.98) and 400-meter hurdles (52.15) and anchored the 4x400 relay that came from behind to finish first in 3:19.51. Beauvais ran an unofficial 47.9 split for a relay that included junior Peter Rowell (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and sophomores Ebube Abara (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and Jonathan Santana (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech). Seniors Fred Casimo (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) and Nasim Siddeeq (New Hampton, N.Y./Goshen Central) and sophomore Ethan Clary (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville Central) turned in IC4A-qualifying performances in the long jump, triple jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Casimo won the long jump with a mark of 23’ 5.50” while Siddeeq went 48’ 1.25” in the triple. Clary posted a time of 9:13.61 in the steeplechase. Senior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, Puerto Rico/Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) and junior Stephen Hassard (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each won their respective field events and improved their IC4A-qualifying marks. De Jesus Elias threw a season-best 202’ in the hammer. Hassard also turned in his top effort of the year by throwing the discus 160’ 6”. Sophomore Jake Rachiele (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) won the 200-meter dash (21.88) and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay. The Great Dane women, ranked No. 11 in the Northeast, were idle last week. Both Albany squads will be back in action at the 117th annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia April 28-30. Members of the both squads will also compete at the Capital District Classic in Troy, N.Y., April 30.

Senior Cazal Arnett (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) won the men’s 400 meters and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team, highlighting the Binghamton performances. Arnett, the defending America East outdoor champion in the 400, clocked a first-place time of 48.03 on Saturday. He then joined sophomore Casey Gilbert (Berlin, N.Y./Berlin Central) and seniors Andy Haupt (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and Christian Smith (Trumansburg, N.Y./C.O. Dickerson) to record a facility-record mark of 3:11.82 in the 4x400 relay. Senior Adam Quinn (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was ninth in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase but his time of (9:01.08) shattered his own school record of 9:08.50. Sophomore Adam Helman (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and freshman Camille Ginyard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) swept the men’s and women’s pole vault titles. Helman, who won the America East indoor crown in February, jumped 15’ 9” while Ginyard cleared 11’ 3.75”. Freshman Ashley Aupont (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) was first in the women’s high jump with a height of 5’ 7”. In the process, she tied Crystal Joseph’s 1986 school record. Up next for Binghamton is the Cornell Big Red Invitational on Sunday, May 1 starting at 10 a.m.
Boston University competed at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational at Weaver Stadium on Friday. The Terrier women are ranked No. 10 in the Northeast region. Junior Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) set a school record in the 5,000-meter run, highlighting the Terriers’ performance. Matthews recorded a time of 16:01.16, which broke the three-year-old mark set by Marisa Ryan (16:02.95). In the 1,500 meters, senior Sarah Mosser (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) earned a personal record with a time of 4:32.81 while classmate Kathleen Davies (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./St. Basil Academy) crossed the finish line in 4:29.96. Freshman Rosa Moriello (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) also competed in the 5,000-meter run, securing a time of 16:52.98. On the men’s side, sophomore Robert Gibson (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) set a personal record in the 5,000-meter run (14:09.94), and senior Craig MacPherson (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) participated in the 1,500-meter run, recording a time of 3:58.79. The Terriers will return to action at the three-day Penn Relays, beginning on Thursday, April 28.
University of Hartford competed at the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday with the men taking three titles and a fourth-place finish (103 points) while the women took home crowns in two events and a third-place team finish (103 points). Junior Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) continues to blaze a path in his third season with the Hawks, notching triumphs in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. The junior’s time of 22.31 bested 13 other runners in the 200 while he crossed the line in 49.43 in the 400-meter run. Senior Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) was also impressive in the 400, finishing on Emerole’s heels with a time of 49.81, good for second place. In the relays, the 4x100-meter team combined for a time of 44.38 to outrun Maine by one second for top-billing in the event. For the Hawk women, junior Nicolle Adams (Schoharie, N.Y./Schoharie) kicked off the week with a fourth-place finish out of 24 competitors at the Holy Cross Heptathlon. Behind solid performances in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump, Adams compiled 3,791 points in the two-day event that concluded on Thursday. At the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday, the Hartford women were led by sophomore Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), who delivered her second outdoor victory of the season in the 400. Appiagyei rounded the track in a time of 58.53. The Hawks cleaned up in the long jump as freshman Alexandria Thatcher (Carver, Mass./Carver) (4.82 meters), junior Miranda Wallace (Lisbon, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) (4.81 meters) and freshman Rebecca Cheatham (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) (4.61 meters) claimed the top three spots in the event. Hartford returns to the track for the University of Massachusetts Pre-Conference meet, its final tune-up before the America East Championship, on Saturday, April 30.
University of Maine competed at Holy Cross and at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet. At Holy Cross, the Black Bear men took first place with 154 points while the women posted a second-place finish as a team, scoring 106 total points. On the men’s side, sophomore James Reed (Garmisch, Germany/Munich Int’l) took seventh in the hurdles at LSU. Reed posted an IC4A-qualifying time of 14.65. That time ranks in the top 10 all-time in Maine history. At Holy Cross, sophomore thrower Ethan Moore (Weare, N.H.) led the Black Bear men as he took first in the hammer throw with a mark of 171’ 8”. On the women’s side, junior Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) led the Black Bears at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet. Labreck finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.46. She also notched a top-three school mark of 20’ 2.25” in the long jump to take runner-up honors in the event. In Worcester, Mass., the Black Bear women received a solid performance from senior Alli Krous (Yakima, Wash./Walla Walla CC), who won the javelin with a mark of 129’ 9”. The Maine women are ranked No. 9 in the Northeast region. The Black Bears compete at the Penn Relays April 28-30 and head to UMass on April 30.
UMBC competed at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md., as well as the Larry Ellis Friday Night Races in Princeton, N.J. The Retriever men sit at No. 14 in the Mid-Atlantic region. Senior Martin Nevarez (Casa Grande, Ariz./Central Arizona College) took home silver in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 4.47 meters (14’8”) while junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dematha) earned silver in the men’s discus throw with a heave of 46.95 meters (154’). In the men’s 1,500-meter run, junior Tim Jones (New Market, Md./Linganore) earned bronze in 4:03.91 while freshman Eric Wood (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) crossed the line fifth in 4:06.94. Sophomore Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Preparatory/St. Francis College) earned bronze in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 13.94 meters (45’9”), while freshman Mo Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) placed seventh with a mark of 11.74 meters (38’6.25”). Drammeh also finished fifth in the high jump, hitting a height of 1.93 meters (6’4”). Freshman John Rybak (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) earned bronze in the decathlon with 4,873 points. Junior Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) placed fifth in the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 14.41, while senior Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough) finished sixth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.01. The Retrievers return to action this weekend at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
University of New Hampshire took part in a pair of meets last week, starting with the Holy Cross decathlon/heptathlon on April 20-21 in Worcester, Mass., before finishing the week at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton. For the men, junior Renrick Pesce (New Hartford, Conn./New Hartford) won the Holy Cross decathlon with 5,743 points. At the Larry Ellis Invitational, junior Max Hoddwells (Wayne, Maine/Maranacook) paced the Wildcats with a win in the triple jump with a leap of 14.24 meters. Graduate student Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 62.03 meters while senior John Randall (Boscawen, N.H./Merrimack Valley) came in fifth with a mark of 56.45 meters. Senior Mike Simon (Durham, Conn./Durham) placed third in the javelin with an NCAA Regional-qualifying throw of 62.79 meters. The Wildcat women also posted a win at the Holy Cross as senior Kate Early (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) won the heptathlon with 4,203 points. Senior Kaitlyn Dugan (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn Senior) finished in second place with 4,109 points while freshman Madeline Allen (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) finished 12th with 3,287 points. At the Larry Ellis Invitational, senior Camille Quarles (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led the way with a top finish in the triple jump with a winning leap of 12.00 meters. Graduate student Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) finished second in the pole vault with a cleared height of 3.80 meters. Sophomore Rosemary Read (West Greenwich, R.I./Warwick) placed seventh in the hammer throw (49.74 meters) and sophomore Melanie Frazier (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) finished fifth in the long jump (5.34 meters) to round out the top-10 finishes. The New Hampshire men compete at Holy Cross April 26 before both teams compete at the Penn Relays April 28-30 and at UMass April 30.
Stony Brook University was idle last week. Both Seawolves squads return to the track to compete in the 117th Penn Relays April 28-30.
University of Vermont competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational this weekend in a two-day meet hosted by Princeton at Weaver Stadium in Princeton, N.J. Senior Josh Henshaw (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) led the men’s team in the field events with a seventh-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 55.14 meters. Sophomore Dan Ciabattoni (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) finished 20th in the long jump with a season-best mark of 6.33 meters. The Catamount women were led on Friday by sophomores Kirsten Weberg (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora Senior) and Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield), who each earned top-10 finishes. Weberg came in 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:40.87. It was a collegiate best for Weberg. McGilpin ran a 2:09.63 in the 800 meters for a ninth-place finish. On Saturday, freshman Nika Ouellette (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) led the Catamounts, winning the women’s javelin for the fourth time this season. She threw a season-best 45.44 meters. Junior Mari Fourie (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate Institute) continued her strong season, finishing seventh overall in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.75, and 19th overall in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.68.
