Jeter, Stony Brook Run Past Maine In First Round,76-55

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.-- The Stony Brook women kicked off the America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Newman’s Own, dominating throughout the game in a 76-55 rout of the Maine Black Bears in the first round game.

Senior Kirsten Jeter led all scorers with 26 points, adding eight boards, four assists and five steals to lead the eight-seed Seawolves (7-22, 4-13) past the nine-seed Black Bears (4-25, 2-15).  She scored 20 or more points in all three games against Maine this season.

Fellow Seawolf Sam Landers contributed 13 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. 

"I think we are all feeling it.  We are ready to go," said Landers on her team's road ahead in the tournament.  "We know our team and now we just have to keep going."

Stony Brook led by 15 at halftime and opened the second period on a 9-0 run, extending the lead to as much as 33 points.

Brittany Williams' 13 points led all Maine players, who turned the ball over 22 times in the contest.

"I thought that they were aggressive from the get-go," said Maine Head Coach Cindy Blodgett of the Seawolves' defense.  "Our turnovers obviously hurt us from the very beginning."

The Black Bears' lone senior Tanna Ross recorded seven points and four rebounds in her final collegiate game.

Stony Brook will take on top-ranked UMBC (19-10, 13-3) on Friday at 6:05 p.m. at the Reich Family Pavilion in Hartford.  The Retrievers swept Stony Brook in the regular season, both games by 10 points or more.
