CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two of the top goal scorers in America East to date are this week's men's lacrosse award winners. Vermont's Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy), the Player of the Week, and Albany's Ty Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River Central), the Rookie of the Week, combined for 10 goals in three games last week to earn their respective honor. The accolades for the week ending March 20 were announced Monday afternoon.
Philie tallied eight points and seven ground balls in a pair of games last week to earn his first career weekly honor. The sophomore attack scored three of the Catamounts' six goals and added six ground balls in a 9-6 loss to Fairfield Tuesday. He followed up with four goals and an assist in Vermont's 14-9 win over St. John's on Saturday. Philie, the reigning America East Rookie of the Year, is tied for second among league leaders with 21 points this season (16 goals, 5 assists).
Thompson tied a career high by scoring three goals in Albany's 18-13 loss to top-ranked Syracuse last week. The freshman attack, who is the third straight Great Dane to earn Rookie of the Week honors, found the back of the cage with 12:06 left in the second quarter and twice more in the fourth quarter against the Orange on Tuesday. Thompson, who also picked up a ground ball, is tied for fifth among league leaders with 11 goals in five games this season.
Stony Brook fell seven spots in the USILA Coaches' Poll and five slots in Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll after splitting two games last week. The Seawolves defeated St. John's, 9-4, Tuesday and fell to Towson, 9-8, Saturday. Albany, which dropped its lone contest at No. 1/1 Syracuse, 18-13, fell to 16th in the USILA Poll and 15th in the Inside Lacrosse poll.

Resetarits, who has 12 career hat tricks, has at least two points in all five games this season … Albany is 17-43 all-time against top-20 programs since moving to the Division I level in 2000 … Edmund Cathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) made 11 saves in less than three quarters of work against the Orange and has double-figure stops in all four starts … Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y./West Islip) is tied for sixth among NCAA active career assists leaders (76) … Albany’s starting midfield of Caufield, Rocky Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Derek Kreuzer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) missed the Syracuse game due to injury … Keith Olson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won 17 of 34 draws against the Orange and upped his face-off percentage to 55.1 … Junior midfielder Jack Reynolds (Farmingdale, N.Y./Holy Trinity) had one goal and one assist vs. Syracuse, his first points of the season.
Binghamton (4-3) edged Colgate by a 7-6 margin for the second straight year in its only contest of the week ... Sophomore attack Matt Springer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) tallied the game-winner with exactly two minutes remaining to help the Bearcats secure their fourth consecutive win, which matches the program's second longest winning streak in school history ... In the process, Binghamton thwarted Colgate's four-game overall winning streak and its four-game home winning streak dating back to last season ... The 7-6 final score represents the fifth time in the last seven contests between Binghamton and Colgate that a game was decided by one goal ... Springer led the way for Binghamton with his eighth career hat trick on the strength of a game-high four-goal performance ... He scored three goals over the final 23 minutes and broke ties at 1-1, 2-2 and 6-6 ... The contest was a defensive battle the whole way as neither team scored a goal in the opening quarter ... Binghamton capitalized on four Colgate penalties in the first half, posting a 2-4 mark on extra-man opportunities ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kraig Heston (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) picked up his fourth consecutive win in goal as he notched a program record 17 saves ... Heston raised his save percentage to a sparkling 66.3 percent for the season.
Hartford (4-3) split a pair of games last week, first dropping a 7-6 decision at RV/#19 Bucknell before scoring a 10-9, overtime win at Quinnipiac ... At 4-3, the Hawks are off to their best start since 2003 ... Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) scored four goals - on just four shot attempts - and added three assists to lead the Hawks ... Against Bucknell on Wednesday, Hartford clawed back from an early 4-1 deficit with five-straight goals out of the halftime break, but could not hold off the Bison ... sophomore Jared Franze (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) scored twice to lead Hartford while Bender finished with three points, a game-best, on one goal and two helpers ... At Quinnpiac on Saturday, Hartford erased a four goal halftime deficit to score a 10-9 overtime win over the Nutmeg State rival ... Down 8-6 in the final period, Bender reeled off three-straight goals within a span of three minutes to tie the game and give the Hawks their first advantage ... In overtime, the junior midfielder connected with classmate Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) for the game winner with just 12 seconds remaining ... In goal, sophomore Frank Piechota (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) had a stellar performance with 10 saves, three of which came in overtime ... On the week, Piechota totaled 24 saves (.600 save percentage) while allowing 16 goals (7.75 goals-against average) between the pipes ... Hartford hosts Nutmeg State rival Sacred Heart on Wed., Mar. 23 (4:00 p.m.) before traveling to Wagner on Sat. Mar. 26 (2 p.m.)
Sixth-ranked and senior-laden Maryland defeated UMBC (1-4), 15-6, in men’s lacrosse action on March 18 at Byrd Stadium... The game was the 600th intercollegiate contest for the Retrievers ... Sophomore attack Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) scored UMBC’s first three goals to lead the visitors ... Jones had been moved from midfield back to attack for the game vs. the Terrapins... He now leads the team with eight goals... Junior attack Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) contributed a goal and two assists and senior midfielder Jamie Kimbles (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s) added a pair of helpers ... Grimm has points in 10 consecutive games and has 10 goals and 9 assists in his last six outings ... He has two goals and five assists in three career games vs. Maryland ... Sophomore netminder Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School) faced 37 Terrapin shots and made eight saves ... UMBC attempted 20 shots in the contest ... UMBC failed to score a man-up goal on three chances and saw its streak of five straight games with an extra-man score ended ... Stony Brook lost to Towson, 9-8, in the first non-conference game for the Seawolves in the state of Maryland since 2002 ... Senior Timmy Trenkle (Commack, N.Y./Commack) tied a career-high with three goals and senior Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) added two goals and three assists ... Crowley now has 198 points, tops among all active Division I players ... With two more points, Crowley will become only the second player in school history with 200 career points ... The Seawolves will take on #10/7 Cornell on Tuesday before ending non-conference play against Bryant on Saturday.
