Matyas and Rickett to Compete at National Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two Boston University swimming and diving student-athletes earned invitations to the upcoming NCAA National Championships beginning today. Sophomore diver Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) and senior swimmer Matt Rickett (Portland, Maine/Deering) will represent the Terriers and America East at the NCAA meets.

Matyas, two-time defending America East champion on both the one- and three-meter boards, qualified for the NCAA Diving Championships for the second year in a row. The sophomore will compete in three dive events, including the platform dive, one-meter dive and three-meter dive. Matyas won the platform dive at the Zone A Diving Championships in Annapolis, Md. last weekend. Matyas also finished eighth on the one-meter boards and sixth on the three-meter boards.

Three other Terriers, sophomore Chelsea Glincman (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) and senior Sarah Colton (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) on the women’s side, and senior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla)for the men, competed at the Zone A Championship. Glincman finished 15th on the one-meter boards and 47th on the three-meter boards while Colton finished 44th and 48th, respectively. Knorr took 21st place in the one-meter event and 18th on the three-meter boards.

The women’s NCAA Diving Championships are set for March 17-19 at the Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. The event is hosted by the University of Texas. The final sessions of the women’s championships will be streamed on ESPN3.com on Friday and Saturday, starting at 7:45 p.m. on both days. Additionally, ESPN2 will air a 90-minute show of the women’s championship at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.

Rickett, who took first in the 100-yard butterfly at 2011 America East Championship meet, will swim in the same race at the NCAA Championships. The senior posted a time of 46.71 in the event, earning him NCAA consideration and eventually an invitation to the championship meet. Rickett’s time ranks him 20th in the nation for the event at the championship.

The men’s NCAA Swimming Championship will be held March 24-26 at the University Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn., hosted by the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  The men’s championship final sessions will be streamed on ESPN3.com on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, starting at 7:45 p.m. on both days. ESPN2 will then air a 90-minute show of the men’s championship at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6.
