CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— The America East Conference office released the 2011 Indoor Track and Field All-Academic teams Tuesday, March 15. The teams include 23 student-athletes, 12 women and 11 men, and features three All-Americans and 14 All-America East performers.
The women’s all-academic squad is highlighted by a trio of All-Americans in University of Maine junior Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional), Boston University junior Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) and Stony Brook University junior Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate). Matthews made her first appearance on an all-academic team for indoor track and field while Conner and Van Dalen have both been previously recognized, Conner in 2010 and Van Dalen in 2009.
UMBC senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) and Stony Brook junior Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) are also repeat selections to the indoor track and field all-academic list. Both were recognized following the 2010 indoor season. Additionally, Van Dalen was an all-conference performer in 2011 and competed at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
Four other members of the 2011 All-Academic team, Binghamton University sophomore Jessica Hennig (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), University of Vermont junior Marisa Guerette (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), University at Albany junior Jessica Panos (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Boston U. sophomore Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional), also earned all-conference honors.
University of Hartford sophomore Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), Maine sophomore Whitney Chamberlain (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Albany senior Ally Panos (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) round out the women’s team.
The 11 members of the men’s 2011 Indoor Track and Field All-Academic team include four past all-academic honorees and six all-conference performers.
Stony Brook senior Alex Felce (Stroud, England/Archway Comprehensive) made his third appearance on an indoor track and field all-academic team after selections to both the 2009 and 2010 squads. UMBC senior Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) and Albany juniors Paul Lagno (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) and Peter Rowell (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville/Manhattan) also were named to the 2010 team. Christmas, Lagno and Rowell also earned all-conference honors after the 2011 season.
Joining Christmas, Lagno and Rowell as members of both the all-academic and all-conference teams are Boston U. graduate student Eric Ashe (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), Binghamton senior Andy Haupt (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and Albany graduate student Greg Kiley (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs/Notre Dame).
The remaining members of the men’s all-academic selections include Hartford junior Andrew Chalmers (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional), Albany senior Mohamed Kanu (White Plains, N.Y./Fordham Prep), Hartford senior Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtruam) and Binghamton junior Robb Quiller (West Point, N.Y./James I. O’Neil).
The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Director meetings, where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference’s nine member institutions decided to honor the league’s top student-athletes, whom excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.
For the third straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.
All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time or are made up of 10 student-athletes for individual sports, but can be more if there is a tie in voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
