Wildcat Women and Terrier Men Garner Final Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of University of New Hampshire women and two Boston University men closed out their 2010-11 swimming and diving regular seasons with top performances. New Hampshire senior Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) garnered Female Swimmer of the Week recognition while sophomore teammate Ellen Pelletier (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) earned the nod as Female Diver of the Week. For the men, Boston U. senior Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) took the Swimmer of the Week honor while sophomore Jake Frankenfield (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) was named Diver of the Week.  

Perrault led New Hampshire to a 126-90 victory over the University of Maine at Swasey Pool on February 4. The senior notched a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:1.26. That time was good enough to win the event. Perrault also notched a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.91. She rounded out the meet swimming a leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the ‘Cats finished with a time of 1:40.82.

Pelletier notched the top spot in the one-meter dive against Maine with a score of 251.62. The sophomore also earned posted a score of 257.10 on the three-meter dive.

Ernst helped lead the Terriers to a win over Boston College with a pair of individual wins. The senior won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.51 and touched first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:06.99.

Frankenfield was a steady presence for the Terrier divers, taking third place in both the one- and three-meter dives. He posted scores of 224.47 in the one-meter dive and 180.23 in the three-meter dive.

Binghamton University did not compete last week. The Bearcats completed their regular season schedule January 29 when the men beat the Seawolves, 163-124, while the women tied, 150-150.

Boston University closed its regular season with a meet against Boston College on February 1. The Terrier men topped the Eagles, 172-125, while the women also came out victorious, 227-72. The men were led by a pair of individual wins from senior Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). Ernst won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.51 and touched first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:06.99. Sophomore Jake Frankenfield (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) was a steady presence for the Terrier divers, taking third place in both the one- and three-meter dives. For the women, freshman Kendra Cheng (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) earned victories in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:52.79, and 200 backstroke, with a time of 2:06.63. Freshman Chelsea Glincman (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, posting scores of 247.87 on the one-meter and 255.37 on the three-meter.

The University of Maine women closed out their season Friday night against America East foe New Hampshire. The Black Bear men were idle. After the first 10 events, the Black Bears found themselves down by an astounding score of 126-43. It was at this point that the Maine women flipped a switch and outscored the Wildcats, 47-0, over the next six events. The Black Bears still fell short 126-90. The Black Bears were led by freshman Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), who garnered points for first place on the three-meter boards with a score of 249.37 and took second on the one-meter dive with a score of 234.60. Sophomore Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) grabbed first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.02 and third place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.50. She was also part of the second-place 200 medley relay team.

UMBC was idle last week. The Retrievers finish their regular season at the Terrapin Invitational February 11-12 before hosting the America East Championship February 17-20 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds, Md.

The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team broke a pair of pool records on its way to earning a 126-90 victory over the University of Maine at Swasey Pool on February 4. The Wildcats placed in the top two spots in six events on the day. The win was New Hampshire’s second in as many meets, as the Wildcats round out the regular season with a 7-1 record. Senior Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) notched the first pool record of the day for New Hampshire, claiming first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.26. Junior Jessica Little (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie Central Collegiate Institute) followed up with a record-breaking performance of her own in the 200-yard breaststroke, notching the pool record in 2:18.47.

Stony Brook University did not compete last week. The Seawolves finished the regular season when they hosted conference rival Binghamton January 29.

University of Vermont took part in the Middlebury Invitational this weekend, posting many impressive performances. On Saturday, freshman Ainsley Henderson (Towson, Md./Towson) set a new lifetime best on her way to winning the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:29.23. On Friday, Vermont won three of the four events in the non-scoring meet. Sophomore Haley Falkenberry (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) led the Cats with a win in the 1,000 freestyle in a lifetime-best 10:36.07 and then also posted another lifetime best in the very next event, the 400 IM. Classmate Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) won the 400 IM in 4:36.16, while the team of senior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), juniors Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and Gardner teamed up to take first in the 400 medley relay.

The 2011 America East Swimming and Diving Championship will take place February 17-20 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds, Md. The championship will be hosted by UMBC.
