UVM Men Beat Air Force Friday; Stony Brook, Albany Open Seasons Saturday

Every gameday throughout the 2011 season, America East will provide a men's lacrosse update that  previews the day's matchups as well as recaps the previous day's action. The update will also provide links to live coverage, box scores and highlights of select games. Vermont 9, at Air Force 6 -- Box Score
  • Vermont (2-0) held Air Force to six goals and has allowed just 10 total goals in two games this season. The last time the Catamounts allowed 10 or fewer goals over a two-game span was March 2006 when it beat St. Michael's, 14-4, and Holy Cross, 12-5.
  • Vermont outshot Air Force, 29-24, and held an advantage in shots on goal, 16-13.
  • Catamount freshman midfielder Ahmad Zachary scored a pair of goals on only two shot attempts and also added an assist in just his second collegiate game.
  • Freshman attack Connor McNamara also scored two goals of the bench while senior midfielder Kyle Sminky led Vermont with two assists.

  • Stony Brook opens its season at home against top-ranked Virginia (2-0) in a rematch of last season's epic NCAA quarterfinal contest which the Cavaliers narrowly took, 10-9.
  • The Seawolves, who are ranked fifth in the USILA Coaches' Poll and sixth in the Inside Lacrosse media poll, return 94 percent of their scoring from a team that ranked fourth nationally with 13.2 goals per game a year ago.
  • That group consists of three All-Americans in seniors Kevin Crowley, Tom Compitello and Jordan McBride, who combined for 136 goals and 69 assists in 2010.
Albany at #18/19 Drexel, 1 p.m. -- Live Stats | Live Video
  • Albany begins its 2011 season in Philadelphia against Drexel (0-1) Saturday. It's the first of six games the Great Danes will play against teams nationally-ranked in the preseason polls.
  • The Great Danes, who were picked second in the America East preseason coaches' poll, reached the league title game for the eighth time during its nine years in America East last year despite finishing with just a 5-11 mark.
  • Albany returns six of their top eight goal scorers, including preseason All-American Brian Caufield, who totaled 32 points on 10 goals and 22 assists last season despite missing the final five games of the season due to injury.
Rutgers at UMBC, 1 p.m. -- Live Stats | Live Video | UMBC Radio
  • UMBC (1-0) hosts Rutgers (2-0) in its home opener Saturday. The Retrievers have won four straight against the Scarlet Knights at UMBC Stadium and took an overall advantage in the series (7-6) with a 6-5 win in Piscataway last year.
  • The Retrievers scored 10 first-half goals and won 25-of-29 draws en route to a 16-10 win at Presbyterian in its season opener Feb. 19.
  • Sophomore Dave Brown scored four goals and added three assists while freshman Matt Gregoire tallied two scores and an assists. The tandem was named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Binghamton at Lafayette, 3:30 p.m. -- Live Stats
  • Binghamton (0-1) travels to Easton, Pa. for a matchup with Lafayette (0-1). The Leopards took last year's meeting in Vestal, 12-9.
  • The Bearcats were tied with Penn State entering the fourth quarter but the Nittany Lions outscored the Bearcats, 4-2, in the final period and earned the 9-7 win on Feb. 20.
  • Sophomore Matt Springer, who set a program record with 29 goals last season, scored four times for the Bearcats.
Hartford at Holy Cross, 4 p.m. -- Holy Cross Radio
  • Hartford (0-1) travels to Worcester for a meeting with Holy Cross (0-1) Saturday. The Hawks beat the Crusaders, 10-6, last season behind four goals from junior Aidan Genik.
  • The Hawks led #16/17 UMass, 7-5, at the half in its league oper Feb. 20, but was outscored UMass, 6-1, in the third quarter and fell, 14-10 Saturday.
  • Genik and classmate Ryan Compitello each had two goals and an assist against the Minutemen.
