In
an effort to honor African-American alumni from each of the nine
schools affiliated with the America East, the conference is putting
together a nine-part video series featuring one prominent
African-American alum from each school. This video series highlights the
great history and success that African-American graduates from America
East schools have had and also displays the variety of different jobs
and backgrounds that these alumni have made an impact on after
graduation.
During her time at UMBC, Dr. Sharese White (Class of '97)
learned to balance her time between serving as captain of both the track and
cross country teams while also studying to get her degree in Biochemistry.
Following her graduation from UMBC, White attended the prestigious University
of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where after graduating from, she was
commissioned as an officer of the United States Navy in 2001.
After being commissioned as an officer, White served a
general surgery internship at the Naval Medical Center and served as a General
Medical Officer onboard the U.S.S. Trenton. From 2004-08, White completed her
residency in orthopedic surgery at the Naval Medical Center, and from 2008-09,
she completed a fellowship in orthopedic trauma surgery at UT Southwestern
Medical Center.
White has been stationed at the US Naval Hospital in
Okinawa, Japan since completing her fellowship. Last year, she spent seven
months deployed in Afghanistan as part of the support for Operation Enduring
Freedom. With her tremendous background in medicine, and the life experiences
she has had as an officer of the United States Navy, White provides an
inspiration to all that with a passion and belief in yourself, any occupation
or dream is possible.
