Three Men's Lacrosse Teams Begin 2011 Seasons Saturday

The 2011 men's lacrosse season begins on Saturday with three America East teams in action. UMBC travels to Presbyterian at 12 p.m., while Hartford faces No. 16/17 UMass at 1 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field and Binghamton visits Penn State at 1:30 p.m.

UMBC at Presbyterian, 12 p.m.

  • UMBC, which has won two of the last three America East championships, was chosen to finish fourth in the league's preseason coaches poll.
  • The Retrievers return 22 letterwinners from last season’s squad that ranked second in America East in goals allowed (10.28 gapg).
  • The defense is led by sophomore goalkeeper Adam Cohen who returns after a solid rookie season in which he allowed just 75 goals in nine games (8.28 GAA). 
  • Junior Robb Grimm, who totaled 16 goals and 11 assists last season, is the team’s top returning scorer, while junior captain Jamie Kimbles, who had 12 goals and nine assists a year ago, will be relied on to put the ball in the net.

  • Hartford. which recorded its most wins since 2003 last season, looks for its first win in its ninth all-time meeting with UMass.
  • The Hawks return all but one starter and a league-high seven all-conference performers from last year's squad. 
  • Four of Hartford’s top five scorers return from a team that ranked second in America East scoring 10.00 goals per game, including junior Aidan Genik, a second-team choice last year, who ranked fourth among league leaders with 36 goals a year ago. 
  • Senior Tim Fallon earned All-America honors last season after leading the country in faceoff percentage.
Binghamton at Penn State, 1:30 p.m.
  • The Bearcats hope to return to the America East Championship in 2011 after failing to make the field for the first time since 2003 last season.
  • Binghamton will be led by junior defender Derrick Danieu, a first-team all-conference selection each of the last two seasons.
  • Sophomore Matt Springer earned America East all-rookie honors a year ago after scoring a program-record 29 goals.
