UMBC and New Hampshire Lead After Day One

After day one of the 2011 America East Swimming and Diving Championship, UMBC leads on the men's side while University of New Hampshire holds the top spot on the women's side. Additionally, each of the day's four swimming events broke a record.

In men's action, the Retrievers sit in first place after day one, checking in with a total of 114 points. Boston University sits just behind the Retrievers in second place with 107 points. Binghamton University is in third with 93 points while University of Maine (81 points) and Stony Brook University (60 points) round out the field.

The Retrievers were carried by a strong showing in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of seniors Brad Reitz and Keilan Freeman, sophomore Pierre De Waal and senior Eric Jones took the top spot with a mark of 6:34.28, a pace that broke the America East Conference meet record. The Retrievers also grabbed second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and the one-meter dive. In the dive, sophomore Andrew Eckhoff took the silver.

Boston University notched two wins on the evening. Senior Tanner Knorr won the one-meter dive with a 12-dive score of 565.65. In the 200 medley relay, the team of seniors Bryon Kallert, Kyle Ernst and Matthew Rickett and junior Daniel Kempf finished in a meet-record time of 1:28.91.

On the women's side, New Hampshire leads the pack with 80 points. UMBC is in second with 66 points, followed by Boston U. in third with 64 points and University of Vermont in fourth with 60 points. Stony Brook (56 points), Binghamton (54) and Maine (48) are in fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively.
 
The Wildcats won both the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Senior Amy Perrault, sophomores Shelli Reed and Sydney Tribou and senior Kiersten Wollenzien won the 800 free relay with a record-setting time of 7:19.79 while the 200 medley relay team of Perrault, senior Allison Nahin, freshman Lauren McCandless and Reed posted a record time of 1:41.09.
