Stony Brook Alum Alphonzo Grant is Featured for Black History Month

In an effort to honor African-American alumni from each of the nine schools affiliated with the America East, the conference is putting together a nine-part video series featuring one prominent African-American alum from each school. This video series highlights the great history and success that African-American graduates from America East schools have had and also displays the variety of different jobs and backgrounds that these alumni have made an impact on after graduation.

Following his football career at Stony Brook University, Alphonzo Grant (class of '93) has emerged as a tremendously successful corporate lawyer. As a lawyer for Sullivan and Cromwell LLP, Grant is a litigation special counsel and a member of the Firm's Criminal Defense and Investigations Group. Throughout his career, Grant has represented numerous clients in cases ranging from money laundering to insider trading.

While his work in corporate law has been exemplary, Grant has also focused his energy towards developing more diversity in his field. Grant is a member of the NYC Bar Association Enhance Diversity in the Profession Committee. He is also a frequent presenter at his firm on law diversity and inclusion. In 2000-01, Grant was a member of the NYC Bar Association, Civil Rights Committee, as well as the secretary of the NYC Bar Association Minorities in the Court Committee in 1998-99.

As a former athlete at the intercollegiate level, Grant is a unique role model for young African-Americans. With his success in corporate law, Grant demonstrates that through athletics and a great education, there is nothing to stop a person from succeeding in any career field
