Women's Lacrosse Season Officially Gets Underway This Weekend

Two America East women's lacrosse squads will start the spring season this weekend. UMBC gets things started in Catonsville when it hosts George Mason on Friday evening at 5p. Stony Brook follows with its season opener 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Colgate. The Seawolves will return home to Long Island for its home opener against Manhattan on Wednesday, February 16 at 3 p.m.

University of Vermont and Binghamton both get their seasons underway next weekend, with the Catamounts traveling to UMass on Saturday, February 19 and Binghamton making the trip to face Louisville on Sunday, February 20. Albany and Boston U. host Siena and UMass, respectively, on February 22 and 23 in their season openers, while New Hampshire kicks off 2011 on the road at Holy Cross on February 23.

Saturday, February 12
at Colgate 17, Stony Brook 15 -- Box Score

  • Stony Brook (0-1) dropped its season opener to Colgate for the tird straight season. The last time the Seawolves opened their schedule with a win was in 2008, with an 18-14 victory over Colgate.
  • Stony Brook was outshot by Colgate, 29-22. Colgate also held a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Seawolves converted on just 14 of their 23 clear attempts.
  • Stony Brook seniors Melissa Cook and Samantha Dhaja each scored four goals. The pair were the leading scorers for the Seawolves in 2010 as Cook scored 37 points (29 g, 8 a) and Dhaja scored 28 points (22 g, 6 a).
  • Freshman attack Alyssa Cardillo added two goals and three assists in her Stony Brook debut.
  • Senior keeper Mickey Cahill made eight saves on the afternoon.

George Mason 7 -- Box Score       

  • George Mason scored the first goal of the game, but UMBC (1-0) quickly came back, scoring the game's next 11 goals in a span of 17:13 in the first half. 
  • The Retrievers outshot the Patriots, 31-12.
  • UMBC held a 44-21 edge in foul calls.
  • Four different Retrievers scored at least three goals, led by senior attack Erika Braerman, who scored five goals on only five shot attempts to go along with three assists. Braerman was the only Retriever with multiple goals and assists.
  • Junior midfielder Alicia Krause scored four goals while notching three ground balls and three draw controls.
  • Senior midfielder Amanda Pappas and junior attack Emily Coady each added three goals.
