CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— A pair of University of Maine Black Bear runners qualified for the NCAA championship meet on their way to earning America East Performer of the Week Honors along with a pair of field athletes. Maine junior Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) earned Female Track Performer of the Week recognition while fellow Black Bear Riley Masters (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) earned Male Track Performer of the Week honors. In the field, Boston University sophomore Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) took Female Track Performer of the Week Accolades while University at Albany senior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, Puerto Rico/Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) threw his way to the Male Performer of the Week nod.
Conner qualified for the NCAA Championships and set the fastest time in the world this year in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:06.18. The junior smashed the school record of 16:28.20 set by Patty McCormick in 1995.
Barwise won the pentathlon at the Harvard Multi-Team Meet. The sophomore posted an ECAC-qualifying mark of 3,532 in the event.
Masters smashed his own school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meters as he came in second at the Terrier Invitational with a time of 7:53.11. Masters repeats as Track Performer of the Week.
De Jesus Elias finished fourth in the weight throw at the 104th Millrose Games. The senior was lone college competitor in the field. De Jesus Elias threw 19.10 meters, the second-best throw in school history. The mark is tops in America East this season.
University at Albany competed at the 104th Millrose Games on January 28. After solid performances at the games, both the men and women appear in the USTFCCCA Northeast regional top 15. Both Great Dane teams check in at No. 13 in the region. For the men, junior Peter Rowell (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) anchored the 4x400-meter relay to a second-place finish in the Gotham Cup. Rowell sprinted the fourth leg in 50.1 seconds, as the squad finished second to Mississippi State with a time of 3:23.24. Sophomore Jonathan Santana (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) was clocked in 50.4 seconds over the first 400 meters. The Great Danes were fifth in the Byron Dyce 4x800-meter relay, but qualified for the IC4A championships by more than nine seconds. Junior Nick Santos (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) and sophomore Paul Lagno (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) ran the first and fourth legs in 1:55.3. Senior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, Puerto Rico/Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) took fourth in the Al Oerter weight throw with a toss of 19.10 meters on his first attempt. The defending America East champion recorded the second-best throw in school history. The Albany women easily qualified for the ECAC championships in March by placing third in the 4x800-meter relay. The group of sophomore Sherez Mohamed (Albany, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and freshmen Kathryn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), Jonelle White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and Brianne Bellon (Greenfield, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) reached the finish line in 9:18.58, nearly seven seconds better than the ECAC standard. Senior Kadine Johnson (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) was seventh in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 17.74 meters, a distance she met on the second of six attempts. Johnson’s toss was the second-best in school history, behind only her school-record throw of 17.98 meters on Jan. 30, 2010. The Great Danes next compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory February 4-5.
Binghamton University took part in the Colgate Invitational. The men won the invitational, posting 142 total points while the women came in second overall with 121 points. With the performance, the Bearcat men are ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA Northeast region. The men received strong performances in the field from sophomore Jacob Platel (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem), who won the pole vault when he cleared 4.00 meters, and junior Chris Veney (Olean, N.Y./Olean) who hit a mark of 6.65 meters in the long jump. On the women’s side, freshman Sara Wickes (Chester, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) paced the field in the triple jump with a mark of 11.06 meters. The Bearcats next compete at the Collegiate Invitational at the Armory in New York City February 4.
Boston University team competed at the Terrier Invitational at the Boston U. Track and Tennis Center on Saturday. Nine Terrier men earned IC4A-qualifying marks. Senior Joel Senick (Saskatoon, Sask./Holy Cross) was the lone Boston U. winner at the meet as he finished first in the 400-meter dash (47.65). Sophomore R.J. Page (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) earned IC4A-qualifying times in two events, including the 60-meter dash (6.97) and 200-meter dash (21.76). Junior Tewado Latty (Kingston, Jamaica/White Plains) placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (48.09), while freshman Stephen Vitale (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) earned a fifth-place finish in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:04.62. In the mile run, juniors Matt Paulson (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central/Union) (4:07.04) and Joe Greenspun (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) (4:10.17) both ran IC4A-qualifying times as they finished third and 13th, respectively. Classmate Billy Whelan (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) ran the 800-meter run in 1:54.85, while Balint Horvath (Budapest, Hungary) finished fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:29.63). Senior Dan Withrow (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) posted an IC4A-qualifying mark in the shot put with a 15.70-meter throw. Boston U.’s heptathlon student-athletes participated in the Harvard Multi-Team Meet with freshman Blake Edwards (Nashville, Tenn./Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet) finishing fourth and senior Rich Haigh (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) ninth. For the Terrier women, junior Shelby Walton (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) broke a 31-year-old school record in the 200-meter dash. She crossed the finish line with an ECAC-qualifying time of 23.95 seconds, just 0.05 seconds faster than Boston U.’s previous record holder (Sharon Danville). The Danbury, Conn., native also won the 60-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 7.58. Two other Terriers collected ECAC-qualifying numbers. Junior Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) notched a time of 16:13.62 in the 5,000-meters, while sophomore Nikko Brady (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), who also placed second in the long jump (5.77m), finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74). Other top-10 finishers included senior Laura Martin (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) (25.11) and sophomore Catherine Milledge (Hartford, Conn./Weaver) (25.43), who finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. In the 1,000-meter run, sophomore Nikki Long (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) was the first collegian to cross the finish line with a time of 2:59.19, while junior Anna Lukes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) placed ninth (3:04.46). Freshman Chelsea Curry (Nashville, Tenn./Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet) finished fourth in the shot put (12.90 meters), and senior Karly Neveu (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott Secondary School) won the high jump with a 1.68-meter mark. At the Harvard Multi-Team Meet, sophomore Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) won the pentathlon with an ECAC-qualifying mark (3,532).
University of Hartford competed at the Reebok-Boston Indoor Games hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday. The men’s squad compiled 31 points, ranking 10th out of 17 scored teams, while the women placed 14th out of 17 teams. Highlighting the Hartford men was junior Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences), who turned in the Hawks’ lone top finish, streaking to a Hartford season-best time of 49.23 in the 400-meter race. Junior Andrew Chalmers (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional) tore up the track in the 5,000-meter run when he turned in the evening’s third-best time of 15:02.74. Chalmers shaved almost 27 seconds off of his personal- and school-record time of 15:29.15. Junior Cody Adamson (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) posted a school record in the 55-meter hurdles (8.28) and sophomore Ackeme Brown (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow) turned in a seventh-place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.61). Brown also took sixth in the long jump (6.64 meters). Leading the way for the Hawk women was sophomore Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), who covered the 500 meters in 1:18.49 while scoring eighth in the race. The sophomore then joined freshman Grace Lawal (Hempstead, N.Y./Uniondale) and seniors Nicole Dow (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and Marisa Poleto (Albany, N.Y./Colonie) to form the Hawks’ 4x400-meter relay team that placed sixth, ahead of conference foes New Hampshire and Vermont, when they combined for a time of 4:03.98. The Hawks return to action with the Dartmouth Classic on Saturday, February 5.
University of Maine competed at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games over the weekend. The men’s team amassed 43 points to take seventh place while the women totaled 62 points to grab a fifth-place finish. The Black Bears also competed at the Terrier Invitational. For the men, junior Riley Masters (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led the way as he smashed his own school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meters as he came in second at the Terrier Invitational with a time of 7:53.11. In the field events, junior Justin Gagne (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) placed third in the shot put at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 15.87 meters. The mark is among the top five in school history and is the top mark in America East this season. The women were paced by junior Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) and her world-leading time in the 5,000 meters. Conner qualified for the NCAA Championships, and set the fastest time in the World this year in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:06.18 at the Terrier Invitational. UMBC competed at the Penn State National Invitational and the Patriot Games this past weekend. Both meets were non-scoring meets. The Retriever men posted five IC4A-qualifying times and three first-place finishes. At Penn State, senior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) finished second in the heptathlon with an IC4A-qualifying score of 5,194 points. At George Mason, senior Sam Wilson (Davidsonville, Md./South River) won the pole vault, hitting a mark of 4.30 meters, while sophomore Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Preparatory/St. Francis College) won the triple jump with a leap of 13.81 meters. Obemeata also took home second in the long jump with a mark of 6.53 meters, while freshman Mo Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) placed second in the high jump, reaching a height of 1.95 meters. Sophomore Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) won the weight throw with a heave of 15.83 meters, while junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dematha) placed second in both the weight throw and shot put. The UMBC women saw two school records go down this week at the Penn State National Invitational and the Patriot Games. In the women’s pentathlon at Penn State, sophomore Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) broke the school record and finished eighth with 3,227 points. At the Patriot Games, for the second week in a row, junior Laura Walker (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) broke the school record in the women’s pole vault and finished fourth with a mark of 3.25 meters. The Retrievers return to action this weekend for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
University of New Hampshire competed at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on January 28. The men placed sixth out of 17 teams while the women fourth place. The men were led by Dan Decrescenzo (New Milford, Conn./New Milford), who was victorious in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in a New England-qualifying time of 14:47.09, more than 14 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Graduate student Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) led the Wildcats in the field events as he won the weight throw with a New England Championship-qualifying toss of 17.07 meters, edging out the next closest finisher by more than two feet. For the women, senior Chelsey Canavan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) was victorious in the 500 meters, finishing in a New England-qualifying time of 1:16.31. Graduate student Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) captured a win in the pole vault as she cleared a height of 3.66 meters, which was a New England Championship-qualifier and also nearly eight inches higher than the runner-up, to lead the Wildcats in the field. Next up for the Wildcats is the Dartmouth Indoor Classic February 5.
Stony Brook University split its squads and participated in two meets over the weekend, sending some student-athletes to the Metropolitan Championships and others to the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory. At the Metropolitan Championships, the Seawolf men were highlighted by the 4x800 relay team of freshman James Snak (Smithtown N.Y./Smithtown West), junior Alex Aronis (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), senior Shamell Forbes (Springfield Gardens, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) and sophomore Michael Lopizzo (Northport, N.Y./Northport), which took fifth place in 7:53.47. The Stony Brook women appear in this week’s USTFCCCA national poll, checking in at No. 24. The women were led this weekend by sophomore Annie Keown (Auckland, New Zealand/Auckland Girls Grammar), who ran the 3,000 meters in 9:15.86, narrowly missing the NCAA-qualifying time by 2.86 seconds. She broke the school record (9:26.68) by more than 11 seconds and qualified for ECAC championship. The Seawolves return to competition February 4 at the Giegengack Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
University of Vermont competed at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games over the weekend. The men’s team put up 10 points to grab 14th place while the women’s team finished seventh with 54.5 points. The men were led by strong field performances from freshman Bobby Mitroz (Towanda, Pa./Towana Area Senior), who placed fifth in the pole vault, and junior Chris Lemieux (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial), who finished sixth in the high jump. The women were led by junior Morgan Powers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hills), who won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:46.78.
