CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The indoor track and field season is underway with a handful of America East squads opening competition this past weekend. Four student-athletes turned in impressive showings right out of the gate to take home weekly conference honors.
Hartford senior Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) grabs the Male Track Performer of the Week nod while New Hampshire senior Brice Paey (Milton, N.H./St. Thomas) collects Male Field Performer of the Week. The women’s awards belong to Stony Brook senior Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui College) on the track and UMBC junior Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) in the field.
Emerole began his senior campaign in style collecting two wins in the season-opening dual meet at Vermont. He finished first in the 300-meter dash in a time of 36.37 seconds before taking the top spot in the 400-meter dash in an impressive 50.99 seconds.
Paey, the Wildcat record holder in the shot put, posted a big number in his first competition since the 2009-10 season. The senior won the shot put at the Jay Carisella Carnical on Saturday with a toss of 17.66 meters.
Stony Brook’s Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui College) picked up where she left off last year bolting to a victory in the mile run at the Yale Season Opener. Her time of 4:36.90 automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championships and it is the fastest mile time in the nation by almost 25 seconds.
Brightful broke the school record in the high jump in UMBC’s first meet of the season. She posted a mark of 5’7” to break the previous record of 5’6.5” set in 2007.
The University at Albany did not compete last week. The Great Danes will start the indoor season on Jan. 6 at the Crowell Open in West Point, N.Y.
Binghamton recorded four first-place finishes and set three school records to highlight its day at the season-opening non-scoring Cornell Indoor Relays. All three records were touched on the women’s side. Jenna Marrione (Warwick, N.Y/Warwick Valley) tied a school record in the pole vault with a first-place height of 12’3.5”. Senior Kaitlin Sullivan (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) brown her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.90. Meanwhile, Jessica Hennig (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) also broke her own school record in the 300-meter dash in a second-place time of 40.37. For the men, junior Jeff Martinez (Binghamton, N.Y./Johnson City) and senior Colin Anderson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded the best finishes for the Bearcats. Martinez won the 5,000 meter run in 14:46.64 as Anderson took top honors in the weight throw (56’10.75”). Binghamton is off until Jan. 21 when it returns to Ithaca for the Cornell Upstate Challenge.
Boston University will not begin competition until well after the new year, starting its season Jan. 19 hosting the Multi-Team Meet.
Hartford started its indoor season at Vermont, falling 90-60 on the men’s side while the women fell 97-66. Five event wins and a pair of school records came on the men’s side. Anderson Emerole picked up a pair of top finishes to lead the way for the Hawks. Emerole crossed the line first in the 300-meter dash with a time of 36.37. The senior then picked up the top spot in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.99. Cody Adamson (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Kyle Cholewa (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) each broke their own school records with Adamson posting a winning time of 8.25 in the 55-meter hurdles and Cholewa set the mark in the weight throw with a mark of 14.32 meters. Freshman Andrew Henry (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) hit a mark of 12.78 meters in the triple jump to record the fifth victory for the men. The Hawk women excelled in the field events. Savannah Gordon (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenandowa) won a pair of events in her first collegiate meet. She placed first in the shot put with a distance 11.31 meters and in the weight throw with a 14.73-meter toss. Hartford notched two more wins in the field. Sophomore Alisha Beeman (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) cleared a height of 1.55 meters in the high jump while classmates Rebecca Cheatham (4.91 meters) and Alexandria Cheatham (4.87 meters) finished one-two in the long jump. Hartford is back in action this weekend at the Harvard Open in Cambridge on Dec. 10.
Maine begins its season this weekend with a multi-meet on Friday before hosting New Hampshire on Saturday.
In UMBC’s first meet of the indoor season, the Retrievers turned in record-breaking performances at the unscored Bison Opener at Bucknell University. Freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington), running in her first collegiate meet, broke the school record in the 60m dash, setting the new mark at 7.52 seconds, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. In the shot put, the Retrivers had two women qualify for ECAC’s with Aanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Chrissy Robinson (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) recording throws of 14.02m and 13.51m, respectively. For the men, a pair of runners landed on the school’s all-time performance lists. Denny Long (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/FIU) is ninth in the 60m dash at 6.93 seconds while Kyle Mitchell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) placed eighth in the 60m hurdles in 8.52 seconds. UMBC now takes the rest of 2011 off from competition before returning to run at the Penn State Relays on Jan. 7.
The New Hampshire indoor track and field teams kicked off the 2011-2012 season at the Jay Carisella Carnival on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. Brice Paey and Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) paced the Wildcat men with a pair of first-place finishes. Greene won the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:32.33, while Pay captured the shot put with a toss of 17.66 meters. The 4x400 relay team also picked up a victory with a time of 3:22.29. The
UNH women got a strong boost from Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia). She led the Wildcats with a win in the 3,000 meters, crossing the finishing line in a time of 9:45.85. In the field, Kate Early (Corning, N.Y.) took second in the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters, while Melanie Frazier (Bridgewater, Mass.) took third in the long jump with a leap of 5.14 meters. The Wildcats return to action on Dec. 9 when they take part in the Rhody Pentathlon and then visit Maine on Dec. 10.
Stony Brook kicked off its indoor season with non-scoring meets at the Fordham Season Opener in the Bronx, N.Y. and the Yale Season Opener in New Haven, Conn. Senior Lucy Van Dalen automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 4:36.90 mile at Yale. At Fordham, senior Laquashia Hall (New York, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with two second-place finishes, running the 60-meter dash in eight seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27 seconds. For the men, Eric Speakman (Napier, New Zealand/Taradale) won the mile at Yale in his first-ever indoor track event with a time of 4:12.58. At Fordham, freshman Terry Martin (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) won the long jump with a 6.97-meter leap and the 60-meter hurdles clocking in at 8.3 seconds. He also finished third in the 200 (23.2). Classmate Bari Dan placed first in the weight throw (14.74).
Vermont opened the indoor season by sweeping Hartford in Burlington over the weekend. The men defeated the Hawks 90-60 and the women earned a 97-66 victory. Senior Mari Fourie (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate Institute) led the way for the Catamount women winning three individual titles on the day. Fourie captured the win in the 300-meter dash in 41.95 and set a new school record in the event. She and freshman Alana Robinson (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) crossed the finish line one tenth of second apart in the 55-meter dash, with Fourie getting the win in 7.46. The senior also won the 55-meter hurdles convincingly with a mark of 8.32 seconds. Mary Krug (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) took home the pole vault for the women with her mark of 3.35 meters. For the men, senior Nick Archer (Warwick, R.I./Tollgate) won the 800-meter run by nearly two full seconds over the closest competitor with a time of 1:59.29. Meanwhile, Peter Foley (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) gave UVM a boost in the field events dominating the shot put with his distance of 14.23 meters. The next highest mark was 12.91 meters. The Catamounts are off for the rest of 2011 and will return to the track on Jan. 14 at Dartmouth.
