Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) picked up his first career Player of the Week
award after averaging 16 points, eight rebounds and 1.3 blocks in that
span. A sophomore forward, Fraser started his week off by collecting 12

Conference Notes
The Honor Roll
Several other America East players had top performances last week:
• Albany's Gerardo Suero averaged 23 points in two wins last week. He
scored 25 points in a win at St. Francis, N.Y. Monday and had 21 in
Friday's victory over Dartmouth.
• A pair of Hartford freshmen had standout performances last week. Nate
Sikma scored a career-high 23 points and added eight rebounds in a loss
at Marist Wednesday. Jamie Schneck had the first double-double by a Hawk
this season (16 points, 13 rebounds).
• UNH's Ferg Myrick just missed a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds in a loss at Providence Tuesday.
• Vermont's Luke Apfeld scored a career-high 24 points on perfect
11-of-11 of the floor in Friday's win at Towson. He also had 14 points
in a win at Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday and averaged 19 points for the
week.
Albany, Maine, Vermont On a Roll
Albany, Maine and Vermont all started win streaks last week and combined
to go 7-0 as a group. The Black Bears won three games in a five-day
stretch to improve to 6-4 on the year, posting wins over Utah Valley U.,
Eastern Illinois and Brown. The Great Danes beat St. Francis, N.Y. and
Dartmouth and have won five of their last seven games. The Catamounts
snapped a five-game win streak by posting consecutive wins. Vermont
downed Fairleigh Dickinson and Towson on the road.
Maine's Woodward Extended
Maine's three-game win streak was not the only good news for Ted
Woodward last week. The eighth-year Black Bear head coach received a
contract extension that will keep him in Orono through the 2014-15
season. Woodward has led Maine to consecutive top-3 finishes in America
East for only the second time in the past 20 years. He has a 98-125
all-time record at Maine and has led the Black Bears to a 40-30 record
since the start of the 2009-10 season, including a 6-4 mark record so
far this year. Woodward has also led his program to wins over
BCS-Conference schools Boston College and Penn State.
Offensive Firepower
America East boasts three of nation's top offensive threats. In fact,
the league is the only Division I conference to have three players
ranked among the nation's top 20 scorers. Albany's Gerardo Suero, who
has scored 20-plus points eight times, leads the league and ranks sixth
nationally averaging 21.5 points per game. Boston University's Darryl
Partin, who also has eight 20-plus point games, ranks 12th in the
country scoring 20.8 points per game while Maine's Gerald McLemore is
19th averaging 20.2 points per game.
Newcomers Continue to Shine
Several newcomers continue to impress as the 2011-12 season approaches
the new year. Six of the conference's top 20 scorers, including five
freshmen, are newcomers. Albany's Gerardo Suero leads the league and is
tied for sixth nationally (21.5 ppg). Four-time America East Rookie of
the Week Justin Edwards ranks fourth among America East leaders
averaging 17.3 points per game. He's also seventh in rebounding (6.5
rpg), leads the conference in steals, (2.2 spg) and is 10th in assists
(2.8 apg). Binghamton's Ben Dickinson is one of just four players to
rank in the conference's top 10 in both scoring (7th - 14.1 ppg) and
rebounding (8th - 6.3 rpg). Vermont's Four McGlynn (11.0 ppg), and
Hartford's Wes Cole (10.4 ppg) and Nate Sikma (10.1 ppg) rank 17th, 19th
and 20th, respectively.
Conference Play Around the Corner
League play commences just two weeks from today. The 16-game round-robin
schedule kicks off on Jan. 2 with four conference contests. Finishing
among the league's top two is crucial for teams with championship
aspirations. Only twice in America East's 32 year history has a team
finished outside the top two and gone on to win the league title.
Delaware captured the crown as the America East Championship's No. 3
seed in 1999 while Holy Cross finished third in the league's inaugural
year (1979-80) and went on to win the championship.
Beating the Big Boys
Boston University's win over ACC member Boston College on Dec. 3 was
America East's eighth over a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conference
school since 2008. Maine beat Penn State out of the Big Ten last season
and also knocked off BC in 2010. Boston U. downed Indiana in 2009 and
also knocked off Oregon St. of the Pac 12 in the College Basketball
Invitational that season. Vermont beat both Colorado, which was then in
the Big XII, and Rutgers of the Big East during the 2008-09 campaign
while UMBC beat Nebraska (Big XII) that season.

women’s side, UMBC, and 2011 league champion, Hartford, will square off
on Feb. 19 at Chase Arena in the first-ever nationally televised

tournament, which will be combined for the third straight season, will
be held on March 1-4, 2012 at Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion
