The term student-athlete has a special meaning defining many of the competitors in the America East Conference who excel in both academics and athletics. UMBC senior guard Michelle Kurowski is one example of an America East student-athlete with a compelling determination to succeed both on and off the basketball court.
Kurowski, is the 2010-11 America East Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete, has managed to balance the demands of Division I athletics and the rigorous curriculum at an honors institution. She finished her undergraduate degree in three years with a 3.9 GPA and is currently pursuing her masters in early childhood education. She leads UMBC in points and was selected to the America East All-Conference First Team last year.
Kurowski is also an active member in SAAC, serving as Vice President on campus. She helps coordinate fundraisers and participates in community service, mentoring elementary school children. Phil Stern, head coach at UMBC, is not only proud of Michelle’s success but sees her as a positive role model on a team which has been named to the WBCA Academic Top-25 Honor Roll for two straight years.
It is clear after speaking with Michelle that she has a strong passion for basketball, school, and helping others. The sky’s the limit for this Retriever as she continues to strive for success, impacting her team, school and community.
