Wildcats and Terriers Nab Weekly Swimming and Diving Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— A pair of New Hampshire Wildcats bring home the female swimmer and diver of the week awards after turning in solid performances in a convincing win over Central Connecticut. Shelli Reed (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and Ellen Pelletier (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) receive the women’s nod this week, while a Boston University duo takes the men’s honors. Bryan Bonack (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) and Jared Scheck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) are the men’s winners.

Reed paved the way with three first-place finishes, as UNH took down Central Connecticut State (213-84) and Bryant (221-69) on Saturday. Reed claimed the top spot in the 50 (24.02), 100 (52.14) and 200 (1:51.65) freestyle events, finishing the day at the top of the America East performance lists in all three events. She was also part of the Wildcat relay team that took first in the 200 medley relay.

Pelletier picks up her second diver of the week honor after sweeping the diving events against the Blue Devils and Bulldogs. She shattered the school record in the one-meter dive scoring 275.25 points before taking the top spot in the three-meter with a score of 230.30.

Bonack, a freshman, won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.82  by two seconds over Maine’s top swimmer and six seconds over Stony Brook’s. He also posted the best time in the 200 IM clocking in at 1:56.44 well ahead of his next closest competitor.

Scheck easily won the one-meter dive with a score of 233.70, finishing ahead by more than 20 points. The sophomore also took second in the three-meter, losing by just three points.
 
Binghamton University competed in a unique two-day dual meet with the University of Massachusetts last weekend as both Bearcat squads were defeated by the Minutemen. The men fell 189-125, while the women came out on the wrong side, 185.5-135.5. For the men, juniors Josh Saccurato (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Tim Cabasino (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) each earned victories on both days. Saccurato won the 200 IM (1:57.80) and 200 fly (1:58.19) and Cabasino took wins in the 50 (21.71) and 100 freestyle (48.28). For the women, Tiffany Siu (Hong Kong, China/S.T.F.A Leung Kau Kai) had a pair of wins claiming first in the 1000 free and 200 fly. Freshman Corinne Zotter (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) also had a strong day winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.96. In diving, Devin Zdanowski () took second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter for the men and Jenna Easton (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) posted the same finishes for the women. Binghamton hosts Drexel in its home opener on Nov. 12.

Both Boston University swimming and diving squads collected two wins this weekend earning sweeps against Maine and Stony Brook. The Terrier women defeated Stony Brook, 172-123, and Maine, 187-108. Senior Kristen Connors (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) won two individual events, as she claimed first in the 100 (1:05.07) and 200 (2:23.64) breaststroke events. She was also part of the 200 medley relay team that claimed first place with a time of 1:46.30. The women divers swept the Black Bears and Seawolves on the boards, as well. Melinda Matays (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) won the three-meter and Chelsea Glincman (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) captured first in the one-meter. The Boston U. men won 12 events on Saturday during their sweep of Stony Brook and Maine. A host of Terrier swimmers claimed victories, including Knox Anderson (Lakeside, Ky./Lakeside) in the 1000 free (9:55.84), Nik Atashinsky (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in the 100 back (53.56) and freshman Alec Pokornowski (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius). On the boards, sophomore Jared Scheck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) won the one-meter dive. Next up for Boston U. will be a home meet with Texas A&M and Fordham on Saturday.

Maine had a busy weekend in the pool with two meets. The men took on Boston College on Friday and Boston University and Stony Brook on Saturday while the women swam against the Eagles and Florida Gulf Coast on Friday before joining the men in Boston on Saturday. Against Boston College, Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) won the 500 freestyle in 4:54.20. Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) took the top spot in the 100 fly clocking in at 54.58. The Black Bear men also picked up a win in the 200 IM with Matthew Twist (Belgrade, Maine) notching the victory in 2:11.57. On Sunday versus Stony Brook and Boston U., Brian Landry paced the men’s squad with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:01.10. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) and Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) both picked up wins on Friday night. Harvey touched fisrt in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.86 and Smrcina captured first in the 100 fly at 59.81. On the boards, Kara Capossela (Grenwich, Conn.) led the way as she swept both events, winning the one-meter at 247.85 and taking first in the three-meter with a final score of 244.80. Against Boston U. and Stony Brook, Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) won the 200 IM with a time of 2:26.28. Maine also won the 200 freestyle relay. The Black Bear women head to Vermont for a meet against the Catamounts this weekend while the men are idle.

The UMBC swimming and diving teams had the week off as they prepare to take on in-state rival Maryland on Saturday in College Park, Md. at 1 p.m.

Ellen Pelletier (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) also added a pair of first-place finishes, including a record-breaking performance in the one-meter dive with a school record score of 275.25. She also took the top spot in the three-meter dive, notching a score of 230.30. The Wildcats are back in action on Nov. 12 when they take on the University of Rhode Island.

Stony Brook earned a split against Maine on Saturday with a 183-117 win on the men’s side and a 156-146 loss on the women’s side, but were swept by host Boston University by scores of 191-103 (men) and 172-123 (women). Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio/Troy) turned in a spectacular day with a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 (24.56) and 100 free (53.18). Both of those times are season-bests for the sophomore. Stony Brook swept the 200 freestyle as Andjelija Srecovic (Jagodina, Serbia/St. Joseph) won the women’s competition in 1:57.15 and Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) took the men’s event in 1:43.81. Kyle Gannon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) set a career-high score on the three-meter diving board collecting 233.40 points to earn the win. Stony Brook returns to Boston in two weeks for the Terrier Invitational on Nov. 18-20.

Vermont won its only meet of the week, topping Niagara on the road 165-123. With the victory, the Catamounts improve to 5-0 for the first time in school history. Junior Chelsea Krisanda (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and freshman Katie Adams (Houston, Texas/Cyprus Creek) each won a pair of events to lead Vermont. Krisanda won the 200 butterfly (2:10.31) and the 200 backstroke (2:11.43), while Adams took first in the 50 (25.00) and 500 (5:15.92) freestyle events. Vermont won the first seven events of the meet and took the top two spots in eight different events. The Catamounts return to action next Saturday when they host America East rival Maine at 12 p.m.
