Four America East teams, Albany, Boston U., Binghamton and Maine, hit the court Sunday, two of which have had a long layoff while the other two have had plenty of action of late.
Boston U. will be playing its third game in as many days in the Legends Classic and will wrap up against Hofstra at 12 p.m. at URI. The Terriers are coming off their first win of the season, a 70-64 defeat of Rhode Island on Saturday. Boston U. used a 23-8 second-half run to overcome a 12-point deficit and earn Joe Jones his first win as the Terriers' head coach.
Darryl Partin, the league's leading scorer (22.7 ppg), scored 20 points for the third straight game. D.J. Irving had a huge games, scoring a career-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and adding eight assists, five rebounds and three steals.
After nine days off, Maine returns to action by hosting Holy Cross at 2 p.m. Its last time out, Maine trailed #4 UConn by only five at halftime, but got outscored by the defending national champions, 44-29, in the second half. Justin Edwards tallied 20 points and five rebounds against UConn and is averaging 22.5 points and seven boards through his first two games as a Black Bear. The Black Bears have shot a league-best 52.7 percent through two games while allowing foes to shoot just 35.7 percent.
Binghamton has also had a long layoff and after six days off go to the Midwest to face #21 Missouri on ESPN3. Its last time out, St. Peter's closed the first half on a 24-7 run and forced Binghamton to shoot 32 percent from the field en route to the win. Freshman Chris Longoria scored a team and career-high 12 points. Freshman have paced Binghamton in scoring in three of its four games. The Bearcats outrebounded the Peacocks 38-32 and rank fourth in America East with a +1.8 rebound margin.
In the last game of the day, Albany hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 p.m. looking for its third win in its last four games. The Great Danes have won four straight and eight of their last 11 at home. Albany built a 20-point lead and hung on for a win over Navy in its home opener Friday. Gerardo Suero, the league's third leading scorer (20.7 ppg) eclipsed the 20-point mark for the third time this season and finished with 21 points. Three others had twin figures: Logan Aronhalt (18 pts), Mike Black (16 pts) and Luke Devlin (12 points).
In addition to Boston U.'s win yesterday, Vermont beat Siena, 64-62, on Matt Glass' tip-in with 1.4 seconds left. The Catamounts have won four of their last five and have America East's best record at 4-2. Also yesterday, Hartford fell at Central Connecticut, 92-58, to drop to 0-6.
