CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- University of New Hampshire senior forward Whitney Frates received the Northeast Region Player of the Year award as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Tuesday, one day after the organization tabbed her a first-team All-American.
On Monday, five America East field hockey players earned All-America recognition from the NFHCA. This year marks the highest number of All-Americans from America East teams since 2007.
UNH senior back Kyle Lyons, University at Albany sophomore midfielder Corrine McConville, and Boston U. junior defender Jacinda McLeod earned second-team honors, while University of Maine senior forward Kelly Newton received third-team All-America accolades.
The NFHCA also announced the Division I All-Region Teams which recognized 19 America East student-athletes overall on the Northeast and Mideast first and second teams.
Frates, a senior forward, recorded 23 goals and 11 assists for 57 points during the 2011 season finishing third in the NCAA with 2.71 points per game. The unanimous 2011 America East Offensive Player of the Year and a 2011 America East All‐Conference First Team pick, Frates was also selected to the 2011 America East All‐Championship Team. She completes her career at UNH finishing second in career points (139), third in career goals (52), and tied for 1st in career assists (35).
Frates, a second-team All-American last season, is the first America East field hockey player to earn first-team honors since Boston U.'s Pam Spuehler in 2007.
Lyons recorded eight goals and eight assists for 24 points to rank third for UNH
in goals and points, and she also ranked third in shots with 67. Lyons ranked
fifth in America East in assists per game.
McConville served as
an offensive leader for the Great Danes in 2011 as she was
second in goals scored (12) and tied for fourth in assists (4). The first-team all-league choice was the 2010 America East Rookie of the Year.
McLeod is a two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year. She was once again a large part of the Terrier offense as well, ranking second on the team in points (21), goals (8) and assists (5).
Newton, also a third-team All-American last season, led the Black Bears in scoring as she tallied 13 goals and 25
assists for 51 points as well as setting program recors for goals, assists and points in a career. She
will graduate as the leading scorer in Maine history with
163 total points.
