WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Competing in the NCAA second round for just the third time in program history, the No. 12 Boston University women's soccer team fell to top-seeded Wake Forest, 2-0, on Friday night at Spry Stadium.
With the win, the ACC runner-up Demon Deacons improve to 16-3-4, while the America East champion Terriers (19-3-1) see their school-record 14-game winning streak snapped.
Entering the contest having outscored nine non-ACC squads by a 23-4 advantage, Wake Forest maintained possession throughout and finished with a 22-8 edge in shots. The Terriers' defense held strong through the first 74 minutes, but the Deacs finally found the back of the net at 74:41.
ACC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Sengel sent a through ball toward the right side, allowing Jackie Logue to take a quick shot at the far post. Nine minutes later, Sengel added an insurance goal on a breakaway for the 2-0 advantage.
Senior Alice Binns finished with five saves, while two-time AE Striker of the Year Jessica Luscinski led BU with three shots. Luscinski concludes her career as one of the top offensive players in the history of the program, as she finishes second all-time in points with 82 and second in assists with 24.
A sophomore, All-Conference First Team honoree Kylie Strom recorded BU's first shot of the contest in the 29th minute when she headed a cross from 10 yards out over the goal. Luscinski had a chance with a free kick at 32:29 outside the box, but she was unable to get the ball through the Wake Forest wall of defenders.
Both women again had opportunities to score in the final 10 minutes of the contest, but the Deacs' Aubrey Bledsoe stopped each attempt to end the game with three saves for her 13th shutout of the season.
BU finishes head coach Nancy Feldman's 17th season at the helm with a progam-record 19 victories and winning percentage of .848. Highlights of the season include hosting the program's first-ever NCAA game against Harvard (W, 3-0), capturing the program's fifth straight America East title and winning the Husky/Nike Invitational at the University of Washington against the Huskies and then-No. 8 Portland.
The Terriers will return 20 of 29 players for 2012, including Strom, 2010 AE Rookie of the Year Kelly King (goalkeeper) and 2011 AE Rookie of the Year Taylor Krebs (forward).
