Hartford, UMBC and Vermont take the floor on Saturday with all three playing away from its home gym. The Hawks and Retrievers are in search of their first wins of the season, while the Catamounts are looking for their second straight victory.
The Hawks travel down Route 6 to face Brown at 5 p.m. after beating the Bears, 58-46, last year. Hartford has dropped three straight to start the season, is averaging only 51.7 points per game. Freshmen Nate Sikma and Corban Wroe each had 10 points to lead the Hawks in Wednesday's loss to Mount St. Mary's. First-year players make up the team's top five scoring leaders and are contributing 72.9 percent of the scoring through three games.
Vermont plays Marist in the first of two games at Mohegan Sun in the Hall of Fame Tip Off at 6 p.m. UVM outscored the Big Green 29-10 to start the second half and won for the eighth time in the last nine meetings between the two teams Wednesday. The win was first-year head coach John Becker's first at the Division I level. Brendan Bald, a third-team All-America East choice in 2010-11, scored 19 of his career-best 21 in the second half. Pat Bergmann added his first career double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
UMBC, which dropped its third straight game to start the season Thursday, travels to VMI Saturday at 6 p.m. Brian Neller scored a career-high 27 points and hit seven three-pointers. Freshman Will Wise came off the bench and added 15 point and nine rebounds. Sophomore Chase Plummer nearly averaged a double-double over the two games scoring 15 points and adding nine rebounds against Penn and racking up 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Red Storm. He's averaging 10.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists through three games.
Last night, Binghamton dropped its third straight game to start the season, 64-49, at Fordham. The Rams opened the game on a 27-5 run. Freshman forward Ben Dickinson, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added five rebounds for the Bearcats.
