University of Hartford takes its 2-0 record to the second-ranked team in the nation when the Hawks face Notre Dame in South Bend tonight. The Hawks and Fighting Irish will be playing in a Preseason WNIT semifinal, while #1 Baylor and #22 UCLA will play in the other semifinal.
Hartford junior forward Ruthanne Doherty has led the team in its first two games, averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds per game.
The University of Vermont women's basketball team did something last night it hadn't done since the 2009-10 season--put together a win streak. The Catamounts open the 2011-12 season with a 2-0 record after a 65-48 win over Fairfield.
Seton Hall transfer Shanai Heber led the charge last night at Patrick Gym with her first double-double in the green and gold, collecting a game-high 17 points and 11 boards. Junior Lauren Buschmann added 14 points, and freshman Niki Taylor made her second straight start and finished with six points and eight rebounds.
In other action, UMBC couldn't rally back all the way after a slow first half, dropping a 68-60 decision to Coppin State, UNH fell to Seton Hall 61-38 in the Wildcats' home opener at Lundholm, and Albany fell at Iowa 82-60.
