CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Twenty-two cross country student athletes have been named to the 2011 All-Academic Team. Ten women and 12 men stood out on the trails and in the classroom as they represent the best of the America East Conference.
Five all-conference performers and five repeat all-academic selections highlight the women’s team. Stony Brook’s Hayley Green and Boston University’s Katie Matthews finished in the top two spots at the America East Championship. Vermont’s Morgan Powers, Stony Brook’s Olivia Burne and New Hampshire Elise Beattie are the other all-conference harriers to earn the academic team distinction.
Green, Matthews and Powers are joined by Albany’s Emily Finnegan and Stony Brook’s Kristal Conklin as repeat selections to the all-academic team.
Rounding out the squad are New Hampshire’s Darcy James, Vermont’s Kirsten Weberg and Albany’s Kathryn Fanning.
Three all-conference runners and three repeat selections headline the men’s squad. Stony Brook’s Eric Speakman, Albany’s Paul Lagno and Binghamton’s Vasili Papastrat earned all-conference status at the championship. Lagno, meanwhile, is joined by his teammate Alex Leuchanka and Boston University’s Joe Greenspun as repeat all-academic honorees.
First-time recipients include Hartford’s Andrew Chalmers, Vermont’s Connor Jennings, Ryan Sleeper and Ethan McBrien, Binghamton’s Jason Santos, and Maine’s Taylor Phillips and Kelton Cullenberg.
The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Directors meeting where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference’s nine member institutions decided to honor the league’s top student-athletes, who excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.
For the fourth straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.
All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time or are made up of 10 student-athletes for individual sports. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
