Hartford Advances To Preseason WNIT Semifinals

After a 7-2 start on Friday, America East women's basketball teams continued with the impressive start by compiling a 4-1 record on Sunday.

After earning a first-round Preseason WNIT win over Manhattan on Friday night, Hartford defeated Long Island in the second round 54-45. Junior forward Ruthanne Doherty finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists in leading the Hawks for the second straight game to open the season.

Maine went on the road to defeat Rhode Island 62-58 to give Richard Barron his first win as head coach of the Black Bears. Guard Brittany Williams posted a career high of 19 points, while sophomore guard Ashleigh Roberts added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Junior forward Julie Forster led the Great Danes to a win against another Atlantic 10 foe, an 81-76 victory over La Salle in the home opener. Forster tallied 26 points and 20 rebounds, including nine offensive boards, along with five steals, five blocks and three assists.

UMBC saw two players earn double-doubles in its 68-64 victory on the road at Monmouth. Tope Obajolu totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Erin Brown finished with 18 points and 11 boards.

Boston U. senior guard Alex Young reached 1,000 career points in the Terriers' game at UMass, however the Terriers couldn't follow up their season-opening win over Providence with another victory, falling to the Minutewomen 55-49. Sophomore Rashidat Agboola posted team highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds.

UMBC, Albany and Hartford all move to 2-0 on the young season.
