Westport, Connecticut ─ Newman's
Own Foundation is teaming up with the America East Conference to launch the
Campus Community Service Challenge. Now in its third year, this unique program encourages
America East students to practice philanthropy on campus and in their
surrounding communities. More than $100,000 will be awarded by Newman's Own
Foundation to student-nominated nonprofits and other charities.
"Newman's Own Foundation is
committed to supporting the efforts and ideas of students who are making a
difference in their communities," said Newman's Own Foundation Board Member
Robert Patricelli. "We have been inspired by the work they do and are proud to offer
the Campus Community Service Challenge again this year. We look forward to working with nine
fantastic organizations."
One service-focused student group
from each member university will participate for a Newman's Own Foundation
grant on behalf of its nonprofit partner. The final grant decisions will be
based on:
- The level of the student
group's involvement with its nonprofit partner, and the degree to which
that involvement reflects Paul Newman's philanthropic spirit of creativity
and commitment.
- The actual mission and programs
of the nonprofit, the populations and purposes it serves, and the impact
the Foundation's grant will have.
The top grant will be $25,000. The
next two grants will be for $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. Six nonprofits
will each receive a $5,000 grant from Newman's Own Foundation.
The nine finalists will be announced
February 1, 2012. Winners will be presented throughout the America East Men's and
Women's Basketball Championship held at the University of Hartford from March 1-4,
2012.
University at Albany's Third World
Impact, in partnership with The Giving Circle, received last year's $25,000
grant. The money has helped to build a
primary school for more than 500 students in Uganda.
"The grant made dreams come true,"
said Nishtha Modi, treasurer of Third World Impact. "We learned that nothing is
impossible! We are bringing village kids into school and providing a platform for
them to dream that someday they might become doctors, engineers, teachers, or painters."
