CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Earning victories in the final home meet of their college careers, UMBC seniors Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) earned Male Swimmer of the Week and Female Diver of the Week recognition, respectively, on UMBC’s senior day. University of New Hampshire senior Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) took the nod as Female Swimmer of the Week with her record-breaking performance. University of Maine freshman Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) rounded out the weekly award winners, grabbing Male Diver of the Week honors.
Jones helped lead the Retrievers to a win over Marist Saturday, earning three wins. The senior stayed undefeated this season in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1:40.69. Jones was also the anchor of the winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:36.37. Additionally, Jones won the 500 free in 4:45.96, the first time he swam the event this season, and took third place in the 200 IM in 2:02.26, an event he had never competed in before Saturday.
Smith earned his second straight America East Male Diver of the Week nod. The freshman won both the one-meter and three-meter events in Maine’s non-scoring meet against Bowdoin, scoring 273.60 in the one-meter and 268.35 in the three-meter.
Nahin led a quartet of ‘Cats to a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 3:56.52. The senior also broke her own pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.50. Her previous career-best time came last year when she claimed the pool record in 1:03.53. Nahin also took the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:23.90.
Shinholser led the Retriever divers on Senior Day against Marist, winning the one-meter dive with a career-high 240.22 points. The senior also finished third in the three-meter dive with 219.00 points.
The Binghamton swimming and diving program competed in two meets in two days for the second straight weekend. The women went 2-1 over the weekend defeating St. Bonaventure, 174-125, last Friday and fellow America East member Vermont, 178.5-121.5, the next day. The women did fall to Colgate, 196-104, in the tri-meet with Vermont. The men fell to No. 18 (CSCAA Mid-Major Poll) St. Bonaventure, 188-112, Friday before beating Colgate, 166-111, on senior day. The women were led by senior Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) who notched four victories over the weekend. She won the 200 free (1:54.33), 50 free (24.76) and the 200 IM (2:09.77) against St. Bonaventure as well as the 100 free with a time of 53.11 in the tri-meet with Vermont and Colgate. Senior Jason Chen (Livingston, N.Y./Livingston) assisted the men to a weekend split. Chen won the 200 IM against Colgate in the pool record time of 1:53.03. He also won the 200 free (1:43.97) against St. Bonaventure. The Bearcats travel to Stony Brook this weekend to compete in their final dual meet of the season. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Boston University did not compete over the weekend. Next up for the Terriers is a meet at Villanova on January 28.
The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in a non-scoring meet against in-state rival Bowdoin. The meet served as Maine’s senior day. The men were led in the meet by senior swimmer Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union), who won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.80 and was third in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:50.73. Junior Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) also earned a victory, touching first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.85. Freshman Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) paced the Black Bear divers, winning both the one- and three-meter events with scores of 273.60 and 268.35, respectively. For the women, sophomore Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) won the 50 free with a time of 25.48 and the 100 free with a time of 54.91. Freshman diver Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) swept the diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 228.83 and the three-meter with a score of 261.23. Capossela has now won the last 14 events she has entered. Maine next competes at the Dartmouth Invitational, January 28-29.
UMBC hosted Marist on Saturday for Senior Day at the UMBC Natatorium. The men defeated Marist, 161-117, while the women topped the Red Foxes, 166-123. The men were led by senior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, while fellow seniors Phillip Novotny (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) and Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won the 100 breast and 200 IM, respectively, in their final swims at their home pool. For the women, senior Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) swept the butterfly events, taking the 100 in a time of 58.66 and the 200 in 2:08.48, while fellow senior Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) won the one-meter dive, posting a score of 240.22. Junior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while senior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) touched first in the 1,000 free. The Retrievers conclude their dual-meet season with a double-dual meet against Delaware and William and Mary in Newark, Del. on Saturday, January 29.
The University of New Hampshire women broke four pool records, including one school record, on its way to earning a 159.5-139.5 victory over Dartmouth College at Swasey Pool on January 22. New Hampshire kicked off the afternoon with a bang, as seniors Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) and Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique), freshman Lauren McCandless (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and sophomore Shelli Reed (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) won the 400-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 3:56.52. Senior Kiersten Wollenzien (Holland Landing, Ontario/Dr. John M. Denison) set a pool and school record in the 1000-yard free, claiming the top spot in a time of 10:15.53. Nahin guided New Hampshire midway through the action, breaking her own pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.50. Her previous career-best time came last year when she claimed the pool record in 1:03.53. She also took the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke, timing in at 2:23.90. McCandless broke the pool record in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in a career-best time of 2:03.89. Reed provided steady production for UNH throughout the day, earning first-place finishes in the 50-yard free (24.48), 100-yard free (52.56), and 200-yard free (1:51.56). Her time in the 200-yard free was a season best. Perrault notched a trio of first-place finishes on the day, claiming the top spot in the 100-yard back with a time of 57.01. She also earned first place in the 200-yard back (2:03.67) and 100-yard butterfly (57.07). The Wildcats return to action Friday, February 4 when they round out the regular season against Maine at Swasey Pool.
Stony Brook University swam in two meets last week, hosting Lafayette January 19 and travelling to face Bryant on January 22. The men swept both meets, beating Lafayette, 150-126, and Bryant, 143-119. The women also took both meets, 179-116 over Lafayette and 178-84 over Bryant. The men placed first in nine of 16 events against Lafayette, led by junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), who was responsible for four first-place finishes on the day. Conway touched first in the 50 free and 100 free, while helping the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams to wins. Junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) set a new season best in the 1,000 free with a first-place finish in 10:17.61. At Bryant, the Seawolves placed first in eight of 16 events. Freshman Sean Hardick (East Northport, N.Y./Chaminade) set a new season best in the 200 IM with a first-place finish in 2:00.97. Junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) helped earn three first-place finishes as he touched first in the 100 breaststroke and helped both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams to victories. The women won 14 of 16 events against Lafayette. Junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) reeled in three victories against the Leopards, including wins in the 200 free (1:58.02) and 500 free (5:12.74), and a collaborative win in the 200 free medley. Heuser was also responsible for three more wins against Bryant (200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 500 free) and set a new season-best mark in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.09 in a second-place finish. Junior Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) earned four wins over the last week, including victories in the 50 free, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay against Lafayette. Freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio/Troy) also had a standout week as she took home five wins, winning the 100 free and helping the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams to wins against Lafayette, in addition to wins in the 50 free and 200 free relay against Bryant. Stony Brook returns to the pool January 29 when it hosts America East foe Binghamton.
The University of Vermont dropped its only meet of the week at Binghamton on Saturday, 178.5-121.5. Senior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and sophomore Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) each earned a pair of victories on the afternoon for the Catamounts. Weaver swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 59.21 and the 200 in 2:06.01. Gardner won the 1,000 in a time of 10:30.50 and the 200 IM in 2:13.00. Vermont also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:50.99 with a team made up of Weaver, freshman Emily Metta (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) and juniors Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase). The Catamounts host Rhode Island on January 29 for Senior Day.
