Maine Posts Thrilling OT Win to Highlight Sunday's Women's Soccer Action

Every gameday throughout the 2010 season, America East will provide a women's soccer update that  previews the day's matchups as well as recaps the previous day's action. Sunday, September 5
at Maine 3, Sacred Heart 2 (OT) -- Box Score | Video Highlights

Sophomore Maddie Hill headed home a cross from senior Kelsey Wilson 2:47 into overtime to give Maine (2-3-0) a win in its home opener Sunday. With the win, the Black Bears improved to 2-3 on the season.

After playing scoreless soccer for nearly two-thirds of the contest, Wilson started a furious final 30 minutes by sending home a cross from Carolyne Nellis. Lucy Gildein countered for the Pioneers less than 10 minutes later, but Courtney Harnais tallied her second goal of the year just 2:12 later to help Maine take back the lead with under 20 minutes to play.

Unfortunately, Sacred Heart would even the score again on Leigh Dogmanits' second score of year. But, Hill, an America East all-rookie choice a year ago, helped the Black Bears snap a three-game losing skid with her game-winner.


Columbia 3, at Hartford 0 -- Box Score
The Hawks (1-4-0) suffered their second straight shutout, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Lions at the Hartford Hawks Soccer Weekend.

The Lions, who improved to 1-1, got goals in the 21st, 54th and 81st minutes and held the Hawks to zero shots on goal. Hartford's Lauren Brodeur made seven saves in 76 minutes of action. Hartford's Shealagh Begley, Julianne Oberholtzer and Alex Uscilla were named to the Soccer Weekend All-Tournament Team.


Delaware 1, at Binghamton 0 -- Box Score

The Bearcats (1-3-0) and Blue Hens played a scoreless 90 minutes, but the visitors broke through 7:29 into overtime to earn the victory.

Freshman Shannon Kearney took a pass, beat Binghamton keeper Carrie Martin to the ball and found the open net from just inside the box.

Martin was stellar making six saves for the Bearcats, who outshot their opponent 9-8.


Harvard 2, at New Hampshire 0 -- Box Score
The Crimson scored twice in the first four minutes of the contest to hand the Wildcats (2-1-2) their first loss of the season.

Katherine Sheeleigh scored just 1:26 into the game and assisted on Patricia Yau's score just 2:12 later. Freshman goalkeeper Erica Correa made seven saves for UNH, which was off to its best start since 1991 with its 2-0-2 start.



at No. 10 Maryland 2, Stony Brook 0 -- Box Score
The Seawolves (0-5-0) held their own against the nation's 10th ranked team, but the Terrapins pulled out a 2-0 victory Sunday.

Stony Brook, which has dropped five straight games to start the season, held Maryland off the board for 40 minutes, but Danielle Hubka broke through on a blast from 10 yards out in the 41st minute. The Terrapins, who are a perfect 5-0-0 on the season, struck again on Sade Ayinde's tally in the 69th minute.

Freshman Chelsea Morales made five stops in net for the Seawolves.

Monday, September 6
Boston University at Monmouth, 2 p.m. -- Live Stats
Boston University (2-3-0) will play at Monmouth in a holiday afternoon match, looking to redeem itself after a tough loss Saturday.

The Terriers dropped a 1-0 decision against Boston College Saturday, their third loss to a ranked opponent this season. Boston University now must face its first road test of the season.

The Terriers will look to scorers senior forward Lisa Kevorkian and junior midfielder Jess Luscinski to put some goals on the scoreboard after being blanked by the Eagles Saturday night. Kevorkian leads the team with three goals on the season.

 

UMass at Albany, 4 p.m. -- Live Stats
After starting the season with two losses, the Albany Great Danes have won their last two matches and try for a third as they host Massachusetts Monday afternoon.

Albany (2-2-0) has won each of its last two games by one goal. In their most recent victory, the Great Danes jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Temple, holding on for a 3-2 victory.

Albany's scoring has come largely from sophomore defender Shayla Bergeron. Bergeron has scored three of Albany's six goals this season. Two of those goals came in the Temple match, one of which proved to be the gamewinner. Bergeron is the only Great Dane to have scored multiple times this season.
