San Diego St. 2, Albany 0- Box Score
In its final game at the Nike Soccer Classic, Albany fell 2-0 against San Diego St.
While the Great Danes put together a solid defensive performance, they struggled to generate scoring opportunities over the opening 45 minutes. The Aztecs grabbed an early lead when Pedro Adan headed in a cross in the 21st minute. San Diego St. added to its lead right before the half, as Raymundo Reza converted a penalty kick. The Great Danes continued to press for a goal, but they couldn’t get the ball past San Diego St. goalkeeper Brad Byrns. Senior forward Bo Jelovac led the Albany attack, attempting two shots in the loss.
The Great Danes close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a visit from Holy Cross on September 29.
Binghamton 0, Cornell 0 (2OT) – Box Score
Binghamton extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a scoreless draw against Cornell.
Neither team was able to generate much offense throughout the game, as the Bearcats outshot the Big Red, 10-9. Binghamton freshman goalkeeper Chris Hayen put together an excellent performance, making six saves to help preserve the shutout. The shutout is the second in the past three games for Binghamton.
The Bearcats head to Niagara, N.Y., to face Niagara on September 29.
Stony Brook 3, Quinnipiac 2- Box Score
The Seawolves extended their unbeaten streak to five games in thrilling fashion, as they pulled off a 3-2 comeback victory over Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early lead, using two goals from Matthew Rothbart in the opening 26 minutes to surprise Stony Brook. The Seawolves narrowed the deficit in the 36th minute, courtesy of a goal from sophomore forward Raphael Abreu. Sophomore forward Berian Gobeil tied the game in the 54th minute, netting his fourth goal of the season. Stony Brook grabbed the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, as sophomore midfielder Leonardo Fernandes scored his fourth goal of the season.
In their final game before the start of America East play, the Seawolves travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. for a match up with Iona.
Boston University 2, No. 21 Harvard 1- Box Score
Boston University picked up an excellent non-conference victory, defeating No. 21 Harvard, 2-1, at Nickerson Field.
The Terriers jumped out to an early lead in the 26th minute of action. Freshman defender Kelvin Madzongwe headed in a cross from junior forward Ben Berube for the first goal of his career. Kyle Henderson tied the game for the Crimson right before the half, scoring in the 43rd minute. However, Berube notched the game-winning goal for Boston University, netting his third goal of the season in the 56th minute.
Boston University begins its conference schedule with a trip to Stony Brook on October 2.
Fairleigh Dickinson 2, UMBC 1- Box Score
In its final game before the start of the conference schedule, UMBC fell 2-1 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
It was Fairleigh Dickinson that opened the scoring, as the Knights took the lead in the 5th minute through a goal by Samson Malijani. Malijani extended the lead early in the second half, netting his third goal of the season in the 50th minute. UMBC senior forward Levi Houapeu narrowed the deficit for the Retrievers, scoring in the 56th minute from the penalty spot. However, that was as close as the Retrievers would get, as they were unable to find the equalizer.
The Retrievers open their America East schedule with a visit to Binghamton on October 2.
