Binghamton, Boston U., UMBC Earn Wins As Women's Soccer League Play Begins

Binghamton 1, Maine 0- Box Score

In the opening game of the conference schedule for both teams, Binghamton edged Maine, 1-0.

It was a very evenly-matched game over the 90 minutes, with the Bearcats outshooting the Black Bears, 12-11. Despite the aggressive soccer from both teams; neither was able to get on the scoreboard until the 81st minute. Binghamton sophomore forward Sarah Furminger scored the game-winning goal for the Bearcats, netting her third goal of the season. Senior midfielder Kelsey Wilson led the Black Bears in attack, attempting three shots in the loss.

In the next round of conference action, Binghamton heads on the road to face Hartford, while Maine is set to host Vermont.

UMBC 2, Vermont 0- Box Score

UMCB put an end to its seven-game losing streak, as it edged Vermont, 2-0. With the victory, UMBC won its America East opener for the first time since 2008.

Despite both teams having attempts on goal in the first half, neither was able to get on the scoreboard. However, early in the second half, freshman midfielder Nicole Clark scored the first goal of her career to push the Retrievers into the lead. UMBC added to its lead in the 56th minute, courtesy of a goal from senior midfielder Sandra Vacarino. The goal, which came off a free-kick taken by senior defender Christine Sadowski, was the second of the season for Vacarino. Senior midfielder Caitlin McGowan led the Catamounts in attack, attempting three shots.

On September 30, Vermont travels to Orono, Maine., to face Maine, while UMBC hosts Boston University.

Boston University 2, New Hampshire 0- Box Score

Boston University extended its winning streak to three games with an impressive 2-0 victory over New Hampshire at Nickerson Field.

The Terriers began the game in aggressive fashion, and they were rewarded with the opening goal in the 19th minute of action. Graduate student forward Lisa Kevorkian netted her team-high seventh goal of the season, as she converted an excellent pass from freshman defender Emma Clark. Boston University added to its lead early in the second half, with junior forward Jessica Luscinski scoring in the 49th minute. New Hampshire freshman goalkeeper Erica Correa was tremendous in the loss, making 12 saves to help keep the Wildcats in the game.

New Hampshire returns to action on September 29 with a non-conference match up against Brown. The Terriers travel to Baltimore, Md. to face UMBC on September 30.

Stony Brook 1, Hartford 1 (2OT)- Box Score

In a highly-entertaining match, Stony Brook and Hartford played to a 1-1 (2OT) draw on the opening day of the conference schedule.

Both teams played excellent defense in the first half, with neither side having many attempts at goal. With both offenses finding more opportunities early in the second half, it was the visiting Hawks that grabbed the lead. Sophomore forward Amelia Pereira gave Hartford the lead with a goal in the 49th minute. However, the score was tied in the 55th minute, as Stony Brook sophomore midfielder Sa’Sha Kershaw found the back of the net.  Despite both teams having chances to pull out the victory, neither was able to find the elusive game-winning goal.

Both squads return to action on September 30. Hartford will host Binghamton, while Stony Brook heads on the road to face Albany.
