Stony Brook Tops Bryant; Binghamton and Vermont Earn Draws

Stony Brook 2, Bryant 1 -- Box Score

With two goals by sophomore midfielder Leonardo Fernandes, Stony Brook (4-4-0) won its third straight match, 2-1, over Bryant at home.

Fernandes broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute on an unassisted goal, his second of the season.

Bryant did not back down, scoring the equalizer just 29 seconds later. Senior midfielder Norbert Guery scored an unassisted goal for the Bulldogs, knotting the score, 1-1.

However, Fernandes struck again, this time on a free kick, putting home the gamewinner in the 74th minute, his second goal of the game and third of the season. Fernandes took three of the Seawolves' 11 shots on the afternoon.

Binghamton 1, Colgate 1 (2 OT) -- Box Score

Binghamton (1-4-1) fought its way to a tie against Colgate, 1-1, earning a first-place finish in the Colgate Raider Adidas Classic.

Binghamton fell behind the host Raiders in the second half when sophomore midfielder Mike Reidy scored on a rebound to give Colgate a lead, 1-0, in the 66th minute.

The Bearcats quickly returned the favor, as senior back Kyle Manscuk scissor-kicked a corner from junior midfielder Ryan Walter into the back of the net in the 67th minute. That goal tied the score, 1-1.

The two teams played the duration of regulation and two overtime periods without scoring any goals, though not for lack of trying. Binghamton took six shots combined in the two overtime periods.  

Manscuk, who also scored the gamewinner for the Bearcats Friday against Lafayette, was named tournament MVP.


Vermont 1, Lafayette 1 (2 OT) -- Box Score

Vermont (4-1-2) battled Lafayette to a 1-1 draw to close out play in the Colgate Raider Adidas Classic in Hamilton, N.Y.

The Catamounts took an early lead on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Malick Camara in the 15th minute. The goal put Vermont ahead, 1-0. The Catamounts took that lead into the second half.

Vermont was unable to hold the lead, giving up a goal to sophomore midfielder Blake Fink in the 55th minute, tying the match, 1-1. The score remained tied for the rest of the match.

Vermont kept pressure on the Leopards throughout the match, taking 22 shots and putting 10 shots on goal. The Catamounts could only muster one shot in the two overtime periods, however, while Lafayette took seven shots, two on goal, in the extra time. 

With the tie, the Catamounts are now unbeaten in their last five matches.

 

Brown 2, Boston U. 0 -- Box Score

After giving up a late first-half goal, Boston University was unable to come back in the second half, losing its Sunday evening match to Brown, 1-0.

Brown took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when freshman midfielder T.J. Popolizio put a shot past Terrier redshirt freshman keeper Brandon Briggs in the 44th minute. The Bears added to that lead in the second half with a goal headed in by sophpmore midfielder Bobby Belair. Belair's goal gave the Bears a 2-0 cushion.

The Terriers were not without their chances. They outshot the Bears, 17-9, for the match and took nine corners compared to only two for Brown. Senior forward Aaron O'Neal led the charge for Boston U., taking three shots, two of which were on goal. However, Boston U. could not translate those opportunities into goals.

 

Rutgers 2, Hartford 1 (2 OT) -- Box Score

Hartford (2-3-0) scored first on the road against Rutgers, but gave up two goals, one in the second overtime, to drop the match against the Scarlet Knights, 1-0.

The Hawks jumped on the board right away with freshman forward Sean McKinney's first goal of the season. The goal, assisted by junior defender Jorge Rodrigues in the 11th minute, put the Hawks up, 1-0.

Hartford held that lead until the 50th minute, when Rutgers junior forward Sam Archer scored an unassisted goal to tie the game, 1-1.

Neither team scored again until the second overtime. That is when, in the 105th minute, junior defender Bryant Knibbs scored his first goal of the season to clinch the win for the Scarlet Knights. 

The loss was the first for junior keeper Jordan Bar, who had three saves in the match.
