Kevorkian and Savage Honored as Women's Soccer Weekly Award Winners

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Boston University's Lisa Kevorkian (Arcadia, Calif./Monrovia/Cal) scored twice in her team's upset win over nationally-ranked William & Mary Friday and has been honored as the America East Player of the Week as a result. UMBC's Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) took home Rookie of the Week honors. The league announced the winners for the week ending Sept. 12 on Monday afternoon.

Kevorkian scored a pair of goals last week and led the Terriers to a win over a ranked opponent for the first time in nearly two years. A transfer from Cal, Kevorkian registered goals in the first and 26th minutes in Boston U.’s 3-1 win over No. 22 William & Mary Friday. The win over the Tribe was the Terriers’ first over a ranked team since they downed No. 19 UConn on Sept. 17, 2008. Kevorkian, who was named to the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic All-Tournament team, leads America East with 11 points and is tied for first with five goals this season.

Savage, a freshman forward, tallied her first career goal in UMBC’s lone game last week. The score came in the 51st minute of the Retrievers’ matchup with Delaware Wednesday when Savage collected  a pass, surged past the Blue Hen defense and chipped the ball over the charging goalkeeper for the score. The goal gave UMBC a 1-0 lead at the time. Savage has started four of six games during her rookie season. She leads UMBC with four points and is tied for the conference lead with a pair of assists.

concluded its four-game homestand with a 3-2 loss to Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 10 … The Great Danes had a one-goal lead with under 10 minutes to play before the Orange scored twice … The loss also snapped the team’s three-game winning streak, which was a Division I program record … Forward Shayla Bergeron (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne/Duquesne) and midfielder Rebecca Lee (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) tallied go-ahead goals in the second half before Syracuse’s game-winning marker was scored with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation … Bergeron, who was named the America East Player of the Week on Sept. 7, continues to lead the team in scoring … She has five goals and 10 points … Bergeron ranks second in the league in total points and is tied for first in goals … Forward Chelsea DeVerna (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), midfielder Chrissy Klepper (River Edge, N.J./River Dell), defender Casey Marks (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and Lee are all tied for second on the team in scoring with three points apiece … UAlbany will play three matches this week … The Great Danes will first travel to face Colgate on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. before returning home to compete against Manhattan on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. and Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.

Binghamton (2-4-0) split two lopsided games during the week, running over host Bucknell 3-0 on Wednesday before suffering a 4-0 setback at Syracuse on Sunday ... Sophomore forward Sarah Furminger (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal/Broome CC) scored two goals to lead the offensive attack at Bucknell. Furminger, the America East Player of the Game, scored once in each half. She leads the team with two goals and six points ... Sophomore forward Jamie Holliday (Apalachin, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) notched her first goal of the season against the Bison ... After a scoreless first half in Syracuse, the Bearcats surrendered four second-half goals and lost to the Orange for the sixth time in eight all-time meetings ... Senior center back Leora Kenney (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) earned America East Player of the Game honors for her vocal leadership in back ... Binghamton hosts Iona in its lone game of the week Wednesday night. The Bearcats are 2-0-1 all-time against the Gaels, including a 3-0 win in 2008.

Boston University (3-5-0) competed in the 2010 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic where it upset No. 22 William & Mary, 3-1, on Friday night and fell to No. 12 Virginia, 3-0, on Sunday ... Against the Tribe, graduate student Lisa Kevorkian (Arcadia, Calif./Monrovia) scored two goals to help the Terriers defeat their first ranked opponent in nearly two years, while sophomore Jessica Luscinski (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) provided a goal and assist ... Two days later, Boston U. fell to the 12th-ranked Cavaliers by three goals after holding them scoreless in the first half ... Boston U. returns to Massachusetts for a road contest against Harvard on Thursday (Sept. 16) with a 3 p.m. start. 

Hartford (2-5-0) snapped a three-plus game scoreless streak on Sunday afternoon when it defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J., 1-0 ... Junior Nicole Weil (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica/Cypress College) netted the game-winner when she corralled a loose ball in the box and knocked it home ... Weil also helped key a defense which allowed just one goal on the week, an overtime score by Princeton that allowed the Tigers to knock off Hartford, 1-0 Friday ... The defense allowed only seven shots on goal all week, with junior goalkeeper Lauren Brodeur (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham Monson Academy) snaring five saves ... Sophomore Shealagh Begley (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) also was a key contributor to the defense, making an acrobatic team save against Princeton that kept the game scoreless late in regulation ... Breeanna Robinson (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led the Hawks with five shots on the week, three of which went on goal ... Hartford stays on the road for its next game, at nearby Central Connecticut on Friday afternoon ... The Hawks will also host Saint Joseph’s on Sunday afternoon.

Maine (3-3-0) evened its record with a second-straight win ... UMaine defeated Rhode Island 3-2 in its fifth road contest of the season ... Senior captain Kelsey Wilson (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) scored the first and last goal of the contest to help the Black Bears capture their third win. Wilson leads the team with four goals and 20 shots ... Maine struck first against Rhode Island when Wilson notched her third goal of the season at 21:57. She received a pass from freshman Nikki Misener (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) and shot the ball into the open net, beating Rams keeper Sasha Reiben from eight yards out ... Rhode Island notched two goals in the span of 3:04 to take a 2-1 lead into intermission. At 30:03, Kaylen Shimoda crossed the ball to Torey Hart, who was in the box ... The Rams added to their lead at 33:06 when Stephanie Santos received a pass from Maggie MacDonald on a breakaway down the middle ... Maine tied the game early in the second half when junior Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec/FX Garneau) notched her second goal of the season on an assist from junior Sady Tobin (Paul Smiths, N.Y./Loomis-Chaffee). Her chip shot from the left found the upper right corner. Wilson received a cross in the box from senior Hannah Breton (Greenville, Maine/Greeneville) and had her shot from the left side, 10-yards out, beat Reiben.

UMBC (1-4-1) dropped its only game last week, falling to Delaware, 2-1 … It was the Retrievers’ first home game since the season opener on Aug. 20, a span of more than two weeks that included four road contests … After taking a scoreless draw into halftime, UMBC got on the board first when sophomore forward Sarah Kopytko (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) passed the ball to freshman forward Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier), who ran past the defense and sent the ball over the charging goalie’s head for her first career goal late in the 51st minute … But the Blue Hens tallied back-to-back goals in a two-minute span to take a 2-1 lead that lasted the remainder of the game … Freshman goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/Sir Thomas Aquinas) made five saves… She leads the America East with 37 saves and 7.4 saves per game … After not playing in the season opener, she has recorded every minute since … UMBC’s six goals this season have been scored by six different players … Savage leads the Retrievers with four points on a goal and two assists … Junior goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Germantown, Md./Northwest) has tallied 147 career saves, tied for sixth all-time at UMBC … Sophomore forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) leads the team with 10 shots … The Retrievers host George Mason on Wednesday before traveling down I-95 to take on American on Sunday.

New Hampshire (2-3-2) went 0-2-0 on the week and is in the midst of a three-game skid ... The ‘Cats dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at UMass on Sept. 10 and was blanked, 3-0, by Siena at home on Sept. 12 ... Sophomore Drea Nogueira (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) scored her team-leading third goal of the season at UMass to stake the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute ... Junior Alli Rozelle (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and senior Marika Posehn (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Senior Secondary) earned assists on the play ... UMass then tied the game with 2:36 left to force overtime and scored again with 3:49 left in double overtime to steal with win.

Stony Brook (0-6-1) tied host Sacred Heart, 2-2, on Friday night to snap a five-game season-opening losing streak ... SBU trailed 2-0 early in the second half but sophomore Sa’sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md./Loch Haven) scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute ... Junior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey/Ramsey, N.J.) tied the game just over two minutes later ... The Seawolves nearly won the game in the final moments of the second overtime but Adamo’s shot clanged off the crossbar ... Freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula Valley/Temecula, Calif.) finished the game with eight saves including a spectacular diving stop on a shot from 20 yards out in the second overtime ... The Seawolves then dropped a 3-0 decision at Columbia on Sunday afternoon ... It was the Seawolves final non-conference road game of the season ... SBU had 12 shots against Columbia ... Stony Brook will now play three straight home games.

Vermont (1-4-0) dropped to 1-4 on the season with a pair of losses at the Black Knight Classic ... UVM fell 2-0 to Florida Gulf Coast in the opening game of the tournament and suffered a 3-0 loss to Army in the final game ... Senior Heidi Hassler (Westford, Vt./Mt. Mansfield) and freshman Alexa DeMaio (Yardley, Pa./The Pennington School) represented the Catamounts on the all-tournament team ... UVM returns home to host three straight games at Centennial Field beginning Wednesday (Sept. 15) versus Siena at 4 p.m.
