NEWTON, Mass. -
Junior Andrea Greene
scored a goal in each half to lift the No. 15 Boston University field
hockey team to a thrilling 2-0 victory over seventh-ranked Boston
College on Friday night at Newton Campus Field. With the win, the
Terriers handed the Eagles (5-1) their first loss of the year and
improve to 5-0, setting the program history for wins to start a season.
Senior Amanda Smith
had one of the best performances of her career in goal, making four
timely and impressive saves to keep the Eagles off the board and lift BU
past its archrival for the first time since 2005.
The result marked the Terriers' first shutout victory over the Eagles
since 1999 and it was the highest-ranked opponent BU has defeated since a
2-0 triumph over then-No. 6 Connecticut in 2008.
Greene opened the scoring in the 14th minute on a third effort from the
Terrier offense, as BC netminder Kristine Stigas saved shots from
sophomores Nicole van Oosterom and Leslie Zules before Greene backhanded an elvated shot to the net from four yards out.
The Terriers doubled their lead off a well-played restart just abover the circle in the 38th minute. Sophomore Jacinda McLeod
sent the ball into the right side of the circle, where Greene angled
her stick to redirect it over Stigas and tuck it into the top left
corner.
The Eagles pulled Stigas in favor of an extra attacker with over seven
minutes left in regulation, but the Terriers held off a late charge to
preserve the shutout.
BU outshot BC, 11-8, and held a 6-5 advantage in corners. Stigas made four saves in goal for the Eagles.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 12) when they host Northeastern. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
