Two Newcomers Capture Week 1 Field Hockey Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- A pair of newcomers made a difference for their respective teams on opening weekend of the 2010 field hockey season to win field hockey weekly awards from the America East Conference office. Boston University junior Andrea Greene (Santiago, Chile/Universidad Diego Portales) earned Player of the Week honors as the offensive spark plug for the Terriers last week, while University of New Hampshire freshman Casey Pohlmeyer (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) controlled the pace of the game from midfield to earn this season's first Rookie of the Week award.

In her first NCAA appearances, Greene helped the Terriers get off to a 2-0 start on the season. The junior transfer from Chile notched three goals on the weekend, including one gamewinner, on four shots to record six points. She scored two goals in her Terrier debut in a 3-0 victory over Hofstra at Albany's Capital Land College Classic. The next day, Greene recorded the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-1 triumph against VCU.

Pohlmeyer also got her team off to a 2-0 start to the season with her strong midfield play. The freshman started both games of the Wildcat Invitational, helping UNH control the tempo and possession in wins over Lock Haven and Delaware. New Hampshire scored five goals while only allowing two scores on opening weekend. Pohlmeyer earned a spot on the All-Wildcat Invitational Team.

All six field hockey teams saw action last weekend, while all six are back in action this coming weekend. Maine will get things started on Thursday by hosting the Big Ten's Michigan, while everybody else will return to the turf on Friday or Saturday.

Albany (2-0 overall, 0-0 AE) won both of its games of the 2010 Captial Land Classic in overtime over the weekend... The Great Danes defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 3-2, on Saturday, before posting a 1-0 overtime victory against Hofstra on Sunday... Junior forward Christina Patrick (Reading, Pa./Reading Catholic) scored both of the gamewinners for the Great Danes... She scored her first goal of the season on Saturday, six minutes into the overtime frame before repeating her heroics on Sunday, breaking a scoreless tie after 83 minutes of play... Goalkeepers Christine Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and Kristi Troch (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) split time in the cage for the Great Danes, with Troch getting both wins for Albany... Senior Alysia Hough (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) and sophomore Nina Walters (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) also scored goals for Albany against VCU, while senior Suzy Clephane (Auckland, New Zealand/Bethlehem) claimed the assists on Walters' tally... The Great Danes will return to action over the weekend, visiting Patriot League foe Bucknell on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Boston U. (2-0, 0-0 AE) got its 2010 season off to a successful start, posting a pair of victories against CAA opponents at the Capital Land College Classic at Albany... The Terriers rolled to a 3-0 victory over Hofstra in its opener on Saturday before using a last-chance corner goal by Nicole van Oosterom (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Chilton Saint James School) to post a 2-1 triumph against VCU on Sunday... Junior Andrea Greene (Santiago, Chile/Universidad Diego Portales) was the offensive star on the weekend for the Terriers, scoring the first two goals of the Hofstra contest before adding a game-tying tally in the first half against the Rams...Senior captain Allie Dolce (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) recorded Boston U.'s third tally in the season-opening win against the Pride and assisted on Sunday's game-winner... Sophomore Leslie Zules (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) recorded an assist in each contest... Senior Maryette Stuart (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), junior Giovanna Monaco (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and sophomore Macey Gaumond (Warren, Mass./Quabog) each earned one assist on the weekend... Senior Amanda Smith (Avon, Conn./Avon) and sophomore Julie Collins (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) played a half in goal in each contest and each earned a victory... Collins stopped all four shots she faced on the weekend... Boston U. outshot its two opponents by a combined 28-12 margin during the tournament and earned a total of 14 corners while allowing only six... The Terriers will travel to face Providence on Friday (Sept. 3) before welcoming UMass on Sunday (Sept. 5) for its home opener. The Terriers will wear pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness in the game against the Minutewomen.

The Fairfield University field hockey team (0-2, 0-0 AE) opened its season with a two-day trip to Pensylvania, dropping decisions to West Chester and Temple... Goaltender Maddy Sposito (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) posted her first career starts in those games. The sophomore made eight saves in both games, representing a career-high in that category... The Stags will remain on the road this weekend when they travel to Hanover, N.H. for the Big Green Classic... Fairfield will open the tournament against host Dartmouth before taking on Missouri State on the second day of the Classic.

The University of Maine (1-1, 0-0 AE) split over the weekend, defeating Providence at home 3-0 before going on the road and falling at #5 Connecticut 3-0 ... Junior goalie Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) led Maine with eight saves against Providence, including several gems... Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) had a pair of goals, with one coming off a rebound and another beating the Providence goalie to the far post off a nifty pass from junior Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School)... Junior Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) scored the first goal off a corner with assists to junior Maire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario/Michael Power-St. Joseph) and freshman Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland/VCL)... At #5 Connecticut, Maine had chances but could not quite connect... Fleck played stellar in net, making 13 saves including nine in the first half... Senior Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine/Belfast) had two shots on net... The Black Bears continue play when they host perennial Big Ten power Michigan on Thursday at 3 p.m. before traveling to take on Northeastern on Sunday at 2 p.m

UNH (2-0, 0-0 AE) opened the 2010 season by defeating Lock Haven (3-1) and Delaware (2-1) to capture first place in the Wildcat Invitational... Junior back Kyle Lyons (White River Junction, Vt./Kimball Union) was named MVP and was joined on the All-Wildcat Invitational Team by junior forward Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union), junior goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and freshman midfielder Casey Pohlmeyer (Millersville, Md./Severna Park)... Senior captain Kara Connolly (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) factored in both goals vs. UD to record a career-high three points (goal, assist); she also tallied an assist in the season opener... Hayley Rausch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) matched her career highs in both assists (two) and points (four) against Lock Haven... Freshman Megan Bozek (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) tallied her first career points with a goal vs. LHU and classmate Tori Welch (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) recorded her first career points with a goal vs. Delaware... Vermont (1-1, 0-0 AE) opened the 2010 season by splitting a pair of games at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by New Hampshire... The Cats fell to Delaware in their opener, 4-2 on Saturday... Senior Brittanie Booker (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and junior Mackenzie Williams (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) each scored for Vermont... Junior Sarah Becque (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) also earned a defensive save in the game, after finishing second in the nation last year in that category with eight... On Sunday the Cats bounced back to earn a 3-1 win over Lock Haven... Sophomore Taylor Silvestro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored the first goal, while Williams netted what proved to be the gamewinner in the second half... Junior Alana Izzo (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) earned a pair of assists on the weekend... Vermont’s win over Lock Haven matched its win total from the 2009 season… The three goals in the win also equaled the season-high from last year for the Cats, when they topped UC Davis 3-0… Vermont has five goals in two games this year, while last year it didn’t score its fifth goal until the eighth game of the season  UVM returns to action this week with road games at Hofstra (Saturday, 1 p.m.) and Columbia (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
