Boston U., Hartford, UNH and Vermont Secure Key Victories Friday

Every gameday throughout the 2010 season, America East will provide a women's soccer update that  previews the day's matchups as well as recaps the previous day's action. New Hampshire 2, La Salle 1 -- Box Score

New Hampshire earned its first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory over La Salle University in the opening game of the TD Bank Classic. With the win, the Wildcats improved their record to 1-0-1, and are off to their best start since the 2001 season.

Sophomore forward Drea Nogueira kicked off the scoring in the 64th minute with her first goal of the season. With the score tied in the final minutes, the Wildcats pulled out the thrilling victory with a game-winning goal from senior midfielder Amy Avitabile in the 85th minute.

New Hampshire will return to the field on Sunday in their final game of the TD Bank Classic. The Wildcats will take on Rider at 11 a.m.

Hartford 2,  Drexel 0 -- Box Score

Hartford used a dominating performance to secure a 2-0 win over Drexel in the opening game at the Temple Owls Tournament.  The victory improved the Hawks record to 1-1 after a season-opening loss to LIU.

Hartford jumped out to an early lead behind the first career goal of Arielle Aikens (Wantage, N.J./Blair Academy).   Junior forward Breeanna Robinson secured the win with a goal in the 45th minute with an impressive finish from the top of the box.   

The Hawks take on the host Temple Owls on Sunday in the final game of the Temple Tournament. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m.

 

at Vermont 2, Rider 1 (2OT)-- Box Score

Vermont began its season in thrilling fashion with a 2-1 (2 OT) victory over Rider during the first day of action in the TD Bank Classic.

Despite being the more aggressive team for much of the game, the Catamounts were facing a 1-0 deficit late in the game. However, senior forward Jessica Baker knotted the game up with her goal in the 82nd minute. With the game seemingly headed for a draw, freshman forward/midfielder Haley Marks gave the Catamounts the win with a goal in the 104th minute.

The Catamounts return to the field on Sunday when they take on La Salle. Kick off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Centennial Field.

at Charleston Southern 2, Maine 1 -- Box Score

In the third game of its four game road trip, the University of Maine couldn’t hold on to an early 1-0 lead, and fell 2-1 to Charleston Southern.

Junior forward Carolyne Nellis  gave the Black Bears the lead in the 28th minute with her first goal of the season. However, Charleston Southern responded with goals from Allison Lewis and Marky Boyce to steal the victory for the Lady Bucs.

Maine will wrap-up its four-game road trip with a visit to the Citadel on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

After opening the season with two losses against highly-ranked opponents, the Boston University Terriers put together a dominant performance in their 3-0 victory over American.

Graduate student Lisa Kevorkian (Arcadia Calif./Monrovia) continued her torrid start to the season with two goals in the win. Kevorkian scored her second goal of the season in the 17th minute to open the scoring. She added her third goal of the season in the 61st minute to give the Terriers the 3-0 lead. Junior midfielder Tiya Gallegos scored her first goal of the season in the victory.

Boston U. continues its five-game homestand on Sunday when the University of Washington pays a visit to Nickerson Field.  The match up is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

at Longwood 3, UMBC 0 -- Box Score

The UMBC Retrievers couldn’t overcome a slow start in their 3-0 loss to Longwood University. After opening the season with a victory, UMBC has lost its last two games.

Despite playing aggressive soccer during the first half, UMBC fell behind by two goals in the first 15 minutes. The Lancers opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and then added a second goal in the 12th minute, to jump out to the lead that they would never relinquish. Longwood pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 84th minute. Junior midfielder Mackenzie King (Stafford Va./North Stafford) led the Retrievers with four shots in the loss.

UMBC continues their four-game road trip with a visit to Buies Creek, N.C. for a match up with the Campbell Camels on November 30.

at Fairfield 2, Binghamton 0 -- Box Score

In their first game of the season, the Binghamton Bearcats were shutout 2-0 by the Fairfield Stags.

Although they weren’t able to get on the score sheet, the Bearcats played aggressively and attempted nine shots in the loss. Freshman keeper Carrie Martin put together an impressive performance in her debut, making three saves in defeat. Junior defender Keri Iheagwara was selected as the America East Player of the Game.

Binghamton returns to the field on Sunday when they match up with Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. Following the match up with Sacred Heart, the Wildcats will play their home-opener against Delaware St. on September 3.

Siena 4, Stony Brook 2-- Box Score

The Stony Brook Seawolves opened up the home portion of their schedule with a 4-2 loss to the Siena Saints.

Senior defender Debbie Aller kicked off the scoring for the Seawolves with her first goal of the season. After the Saints responded with two goals, junior midfielder Rachel Silverman tied the game in the 68th minute with her first goal of the season. However, Siena responded with two goals in the final 13 minutes to secure the 4-2 win.

Stony Brook will continue to look for their first victory of the season when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. to face Iona on Sunday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.

UNLV 5, Albany 2-- Box Score

In their first game of the 2010 season, the University at Albany Great Danes fell 5-2 to UNLV in their opening game at the Las Vegas Tournament.

The Great Danes got off to an ideal start, as sophomore midfielder Shayla Bergeron gave Albany a 1-0 lead in the first minute of action. However, UNLV senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro scored the first of her four goals in the 4th minute to help propel UNLV to a 5-1 lead. Albany was able to grab another goal in the final minutes, with junior midfielder Chrissy Klepper scoring in the 88th minute.

Albany will look to close out the Las Vegas Tournament with a victory when they face Portland St. on Sunday. The two teams are scheduled to face off at 1:30 p.m.
