All Nine Women's Soccer Squads in Action Friday

Every gameday throughout the 2010 season, America East will provide a women's soccer update that  previews the day's matchups as well as recaps the previous day's action. The update will also provide links to live coverage, box scores and highlights of select games. Fans can also follow women's soccer action throughout the season at the America East Facebook page, Twitter account and YouTube page!

Friday, August 27
New Hampshire vs. La Salle, 1 p.m. -- Live Video (Pay-Per-View)
The Wildcats will face the Explorers in the first game of the TD Bank Classic at Vermont. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two squads.

UNH is coming off a 1-1 tie against Rhode Island in its season opener Tuesday. Senior Cassie Guerra scored her third career goal with less than 15 minutes remaining to tie the game and freshman goalkeeper Erica Correa made three saves in her collegiate debut to preserve the deadlock.

La salle downed Canisius, 5-0, in its first game of the 2010 season Sunday. Sophomore Leigh Gray tallied two goals and an assist in her first game in nearly two years after sustaining an injury in 2008.


Hartford vs. Drexel, 2 p.m. -- Live Stats
Former conference rivals Hartford and Drexel will meet for the first time since 2001 in the opening game of Temple's Tournament. The Hawks are a perfect 5-0-0 all-time against the Dragons, who were an America East women's soccer member from 1997-2001.

Hartford dropped its opener, 2-0, at home to Long Island on Saturday. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Brodeur made six saves in the loss.

Drexel is coming off a 1-0 win over UMBC Sunday. Junior Ashley Klun broke a scoreless tie with a score in the 83rd minute.


Rider at Vermont, 4 p.m. --

The Catamounts kick off their 2010 campaign by hosting the Broncs in the 11th annual TD Bank Classic. Vermont has won three straight season openers, including last year's 3-2 victory over Montreal. The win helped the UVM capture its tournament for just the second time ever and the first time since 2002.

Vermont returns 20 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s team which went just 1-13-2. The Catamounts hope for big things out of sophomore Jess Herbst, an all-rookie selection last season, who was named a player to watch in America East by TopDrawerSoccer.com.


Maine at Charleston Southern, 4 p.m. -- Live Stats | Live Video (Pay-Per-View)
After splitting their first two games, the Black Bears travel to South Carolina for the first of two contests.

Maine overwhelmed Iona, 4-0, in its opener on Sunday but then fell to Fordham, 2-0, Tuesday. Freshman Lisa Bijman was named America East Rookie of the Week on Monday after playing all 90 minutes and netting her first collegiate goal in thw win over the Gaels.

The Bucs are also 1-1 on the young season after winning their opener, 3-0, over South Carolina Upstate and suffering a 3-2 loss to College of Charleston.


American at Boston University, 7 p.m. Live Video (Pay-Per-View) | Live Audio | Live Stats

The Terriers continue their string of tough opponents as the Eagles visit Nickerson Field. American, which is 0-2 this season, reached the finals of the Patriot League Championship a year ago before falling in double overtime to Colgate.

Boston U. may be 0-2 but fell by just one goal to both No. 12 South Carolina and No. 2 Stanford last weekend. The Gamecocks scored a late goal to down the Terriers, 1-0  on Aug. 20, while the Cardinal edged the Terriers, 2-1, on Sunday. Lisa Kevorkian scored her first goal as a Terrier after transferring from Cal.


Binghamton at Fairfield, 7 p.m. -- Live Stats

The Bearcats, last year's America East runner up, begin their season at the Stags, who are 1-0 on the young season.

Binghamton will look to build on the momentum created last season when it went 5-2-1 over the last month and reached the conference title game for the first time since 2004. The Bearcats welcome back 20 letterwinners and seven starters from that squad, including all-rookie performers Jamie Holliday and Emily Pape.


UMBC at Longwood, 7 p.m. -- Live Stats
The Retrievers are in search of their second win in three games to start the season when they face the Lancers in Farmville, Virginia. UMBC, which posted a 4-0 win over Delaware State in its opener Aug. 20 and fell to Drexel, 1-0, on Sunday, is unbeaten in two matches against Longwood, posting a 2-2 tie in 2006 and a 1-0 win in 2005.

Senior Sandra Vacarino earned America East Player of the Week honors after posting a goal and an assist in UMBC's win over the Hornets last Friday. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kadet made 11 saves, the most by a Retriever rookie since Megan Smart stopped 12 shots against Navy on Sept. 3, 1997, in Sunday's loss to the Dragons.


Siena at Stony Brook, 7 p.m.

The Seawolves, who were chosen second in America East's preseason poll, host the Saints in their home opener at La Valle Stadium.

Stony Brook is looking to rebound from the 3-0 loss it suffered at the hands of No. 18 Rutgers on Aug. 20. Freshman Chelsea Morales made four stops in net for SBU in her collegiate debut.

Siena is receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll after upsetting UConn, 3-2 in overtime, in its opener Wednesday.


Albany at UNLV, 10 p.m. -- Live Stats

The Great Danes will play in the Las Vegas Tournament at UNLV to start their season. Albany will face the host Rebels at 10 p.m. EDT Friday and Portland State Sunday.

The Great Danes are coming of their best season at the Division I level after reaching the America East tournament for the first time in 2009. The Great Danes return a league-best four all-conference players in second-team selections Chelsea and Maggie DeVerna, Rebecca Lee and Casey Marks. Head coach Mary-Frances Monroe, whose staff earned Co-Coaching Staff of the Year accolades last season, will once again lead a young team, one which does not have a senior on its roster.
