The
Black Bears, who were picked fifth in the America East preseason poll,
begin their season with a trip to New Rochelle, N.Y. where they will
face the Gaels. These teams played to a 2-2 draw last season when they
matched up in Orono, Maine. America East Striker of the Year Laura
Martel scored both goals to help Maine earn the draw.
Maine,
which last season advanced to the America East semifinals for the sixth
time in seven years, returns six starters to a team that finished 9-5-3 a
year ago. Senior midfielder Kelsey Wilson will captain the team after a
junior season in which she scored three goals and dished our four
assists.
The Black Bears lose only six players from last season’s
squad and will welcome in seven newcomers. The team starts its season
with four straight road contests before opening its home schedule
against Sacred Heart on Sept. 4.
UMBC at Drexel, 1 p.m. -- Live Stats
After
opening the season with an impressive 4-1 victory over Delaware State,
the Retrievers head to Philadelphia, Pa. where they will face the
Dragons. The win against Delaware State marked the first victory for
UMBC in a season opener since 1998.
Senior midfielder Sandra
Vacarino had an excellent start to her season, scoring a goal and
dishing out an assist. A trio of freshman also played a key part in
helping the Retrievers to the victory, as Shannon McGuinness recorded
the first goal of her career, while Jessy Brown and Nicole Clark each
provided their first assists.
The trip to Drexel is the first of
four consecutive road games for UMBC. The Retrievers return home on
September 8, when they host the University of Delaware.
No. 2 Stanford at Boston University, 7 p.m. -- Live Video (Pay-Per-View) | Live Audio | Live Stats

Terriers continue their difficult non-conference schedule when they
host the #2 ranked Stanford Cardinal at Nickerson Field. This will be
the third meeting between the two programs, with Boston U. still
searching for their first victory.
Despite opening the season
with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to #12 South Carolina, the Terriers proved
they can compete against the top competition in the country. Boston U.
outshot the Gamecocks 10-9 in the loss, and kept South Carolina off the
scoreboard until the 82nd minute. Lisa Kevorkian was especially
aggressive in her Terrier debut, leading the team with three shots.
The
matchup with Stanford is the second of five consecutive home games to
open the season for Boston U.. After facing the Cardinal, the Terriers
will have a five day break before they host American.
