Two America East baseball standouts were selected by Major League Baseball teams on the final day of the 2010 draft. Stony Brook senior catcher Justin Echevarria was picked by the San Diego Padres in the 40th round, while Binghamton junior outfielder Henry Dunn caught the interest of the Cleveland Indians in the 50th round.
A 2010 second team
All-America East selection, Echevarria appeared in 46 games behind the plate
and hit a career-high .291. He also threw out 13 base runners in just 19
attempts. A 2008 second team all-conference selection as well, Echevarria
appeared in 151 games in his Stony Brook career.
Echevarria helped the
Seawolves to their second America East title in the past three years in 2010.
He also had a hit and a RBI in Stony Brook’s 6-2 win over North Carolina State
on Saturday at the Myrtle Beach Regional. It was the first Division I NCAA
Tournament win in the program’s history.
Dunn, one of
the most talented all-around athletes in Binghamton program history, enjoyed
a break-out season in 2010, establishing a record for runs in
a season (64) and using his blazing speed in center field and
on the bases. Dunn hit .344 with a team-best 17 doubles, 10 home
runs and four triples. His 1.36 runs per game ranks seventh in
the nation and he also ranked fourth in the America East in doubles,
triples and total bases and fifth in RBI (55) and slugging (.626).
He also tied a school record by driving in at least one run in
11 consecutive games.
Dunn, a former Louisville Slugger
Freshman All-American (2007) was named first team all-conference
in 2010 - his second all-star selection. In just two and a half
seasons, Dunn ranked second in career triples (6), fifth in stolen
bases (23), sixth in batting average (.325) and eighth in runs
(104).
