STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Sophomore Robbie Campbell tallied a game-high four points and junior Kevin Crowley added three goals as Stony Brook University advanced to the America East men's lacrosse championship game for the second-straight year with a 10-6 win over the University of Vermont on Tuesday evening at LaValle Stadium.
The Seawolves, who fell to UMBC in last year's title game, will host the winner of the other semifinal matchup between No. 2 UMBC and No. 3 Albany, which takes place on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Baltimore, on Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
Stony Brook (11-3), the regular-season champion and No. 1 seed for the tournament, only led 1-0 in the waning minutes of the first quarter, but Crowley, who was named the league's Player of the Year earlier in the day, fired a blast from the left slot to put his team up 2-0 with 1:27 left in the period. Junior Tom Compitello made it 3-0 at the break on a goal with just 15 seconds left in the frame.
After Campbell made it 4-0, Vermont (3-13), the No. 4 seed, got on the board on freshman Augie Remien's third goal of the season with 4:49 remaining in the half. Stony Brook got the goal right back on a score by senior Michael Sopko and took a 5-1 advantage to the locker room.
Stony Brook grew its lead to 10-2 with just over 10 minutes left in the game after scoring five of the first six goals of the second stanza. Campbell, an America East all-academic team selection, tallied all three of his scores in that span.
The Catamounts made it interesting down the stretch, scoring four goals in the last 5:50 but the Seawolves, who are ranked sixth in the USILA Coaches' Poll and seventh in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, held on for their seventh straight win.
The Seawolves, who bolster the second-ranked offense in the nation (14.0 gpg), were held to their lowest total in six games but more than made up for it defensively. Charlie Paar, the league's first-team all-conference goalkeeper made 16 saves and SBU picked up 39 ground balls to Vermont's 30.
Stony Brook, which will be seeking its first America East title since 2002 Saturday, has now allowed just 12 total goals over its last three games.
