CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Binghamton University wrapped up its fourth straight America East regular season baseball crown this weekend and will host this week's 2010 America East Baseball Championship as the top seed. The tournament, a four-team, double elimination format, will begin on Wednesday, May 26 on the Binghamton University campus, with the winner receiving the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
With a four-game sweep of UMBC this weekend, University of Maine (34-20 overall record, 17-7 America East) secured the second seed in its first tournament appearance since 2007. Third-seeded Stony Brook (26-25, 15-9) and fourth-seeded Albany (11-38, 10-14) round out the championship field.
The first game on Wednesday at 11 a.m. will feature the Black Bears and the Seawolves, who split a four-game series up in Orono, Maine earlier this season. Maine ended the regular season on a five-game win streak, while Stony Brook fell in its last three games to hands of Binghamton.
Binghamton (30-18, 21-3) will get its first crack at defending the 2009 tournament crown when it faces Albany at 3 p.m. in the second game of the day. The Bearcats and Great Danes met to decide the title in last year's final, the second time it had happened over the past three seasons. Binghamton enters the tournament with the nation's longest active win streak of 14 games, and has won the last 18 over conference opponents.
The losers will meet at 11 a.m. the next day in an elimination game, while the winners of the first day's games will meet at 3 p.m. Another elimination game will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday morning for a bid to that afternoon's championship game, with Game 7 being played on Saturday, May 29 at 12 noon, if necessary.
Tickets to each day of the tournament are $7 for adults, $3 for youth 14 and under, and $2 for America East students with the proper ID. Tickets may be purchased day of game at the Frank Pollard Memorial Tennis Gazebo.
