Seven America East student-athletes were recognized by ESPN The Magazine earlier today when the organization announced its men's and women's Academic All-District At-Large Teams as voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
Three student-athletes were named to an all-district first team, as UMBC swimmer Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta) and tennis player Alice Chen (North Potomac,
Md.) were honored on the men's and women's District 2 first teams, and University at Albany women's lacrosse standout Olivia Jarem (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was tabbed a first-team all-District 1 honoree. All three of these standouts will now be eligible for the Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced in early June.
America East Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year, Nikki Branchini (Guilderland, N.Y.) of Albany, was named to the District 1 Second Team, while Stony Brook University's Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta), a member of the women's swimming and diving team, joined her on the women's squad.
Binghamton University's Sven Vloedgraven (Lochem, Netherlands), the two-time America East Men's Tennis Player of the Year, earned second-team laurels in District 1, along with University of Maine swimmer Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.)
To be eligible
for the All-Academic Teams, all nominees had to carry a cumulative GPA
of 3.30 and be a starter or significant reserve for their team. They
must have completed one full year at his or her institution. Freshmen
are not eligible. The At-Large teams cover various sports that do not
have their own All-Academic Team throughout the academic year, including
field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's
and women's swimming & diving, and men's and women's tennis.
