CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The field for the 2010 America East Men's Lacrosse Championship is set after University at Albany downed Binghamton University, 11-6, to lock up a tourney berth for the ninth straight year. The Albany win also clinched a tournament bid for University of Vermont, its first since 2003.
The four-team championship will begin with semifinal action on Tuesday, May 4 when top-seeded Stony Brook hosts the fourth-seeded Catamounts in one contest at 7 p.m. Second-seeded UMBC entertains the third-seeded Great Danes in the other matchup on Wednesday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will played on Saturday, May 8 at the higher remaining seed at a time to be determined.
Dave Brock scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter and John Carroll made 13 saves to lift Albany (4-10, AE 3-2) past Binghamton (3-11, AE 1-4) and into the league championship for the ninth straight year. The Bearcats would have secured a tournament bid with a win by a margin of four or more goals.
Hartford (4-10, AE 1-4) got three goals and an assist from Carter Bender to upend UMBC (4-8, AE 3-2), 14-12, but the Retrievers had previously locked up the No. 2 seed. UMBC beat Albany, 12-7, on April 17 and has won five straight in the series.
Vermont (3-12, AE 2-3) fell to No. 8 Stony Brook (10-3, AE 5-0), 16-10, but earned its first tournament bid in seven years by virtue of Binghamton's loss to Albany. The Seawolves, who earned their first-ever outright regular-season title, were led by Kevin Crowley's six points.
