INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time in four years, the America East men's lacrosse champion will host a first-round NCAA contest as Stony Brook University received the tournament's No. 8 seed and will face Denver on Saturday, May 15 at 5 p.m. at La Valle Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
The Seawolves, who are making their first NCAA appearance since 2002, learned their fate during the NCAA selection show on ESPNU Sunday, May 9. It is just the second time overall an America East team will host an NCAA first-round contest. Albany defeated Loyola, 19-10, at John Fallon Field in 2007.
The nation's sixth-ranked team and winners of eight straight, Stony Brook (12-3) earned the league's automatic bid to the tournament with an 11-7 victory over Albany for the America East title Saturday afternoon. RECAP
Senior Charlie Paar set a conference record with 34 saves in the championship, including 18 in the win over Albany, and was named Most Outstanding Player. Robbie Campbell (4 goals, 3 assists), Kevin Crowley (6 goals) and Steve Waldeck (1 assist, 11 ground balls) were the Seawolves other All-Championship selections.
Denver (12-4), which is on a nine-game winning streak, earned the ECAC's automatic bid with a 12-4 win over Loyola on May 2. The Pioneers defeated Stony Brook, 13-12, earlier this season on Long Island.
The winner of the Stony Brook-Denver contest will advance to the quarterfinals, which will also be hosted by Stony Brook at La Valle Stadium, and play the winner of No. 1 Virginia and Army on Sunday, May 23.
