Van Dalen Earns Top National Ranking to Capture Final America East Track and Field Weekly Honor

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stony Brook University junior Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) claimed the 3,000m run title at the prestigious Penn Relays with a time that ranks her first in the nation to earn the female Track Performer of the Week award. University at Albany junior John Moore (Fort Johnson, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) also captured a top national ranking to garner the male Track Performer of the Week honor while sophomore teammates Stephen Hassard (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Catie Coxon (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg) led the Albany men and women at the Capital District Classic to capture the male and female Field Performer of the Week accolades, respectively, for the week ending April 25.

Van Dalen claims her second weekly honor after capturing her second top 10 national ranking. At the Penn Relays on Thursday, she raced to first in the 3,000m in an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:17.23. The time puts Van Dalen atop the national rankings as well as the America East performance list. She is also ranked eighth nationally in the 1,500m after posting a time of 4:17.95 at the Joe Hilton Carolina Fast Times.

Moore competed at both the Penn Relays and the UAlbany/UTech Friendship meet over the week. At the Penn Relays, Moore anchored the distance medley relay that won the college division with a school record time of 9:43.15. The distance medley relay team placed eighth overall. He also ran a leg of the 4x1 mile relay that placed 13th in 16:54.02. At the Friendship meet, Moore won the 800m in an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:49.12. The mark ties him for 19th in the nation and 13th in the East region.

Hassard led the Great Dane men at the Capital District Classic and qualified for the IC4A championship in May. He won the discus throw with a personal-best toss of 48.46m. The mark ranks Hassard second in the conference standings. On Monday against UTech, Hassard placed second in the event with a mark of 45.44m.

Coxon won a pair of discus throw titles over the weekend. At the Capital District Classic, she won the event with a personal-best toss of 47.93m. The throw qualifies her for the ECAC championship and ranks her 38th in the East. Coxon’s mark is the best posted by a conference competitor this season. She claimed her second discus throw title at the Friendship meet with a score of 44.60m. On Monday, she also placed fourth in the shot put (10.42m).

The Albany women have climbed into the USTFCCCA Northeast regional rankings, replacing Maine at the seventh spot.

Albany – Albany prepped for the America East Conference outdoor track and field championship at the 116th Annual Penn Relays and Capital District Classic. The Great Danes registered three school records, eight IC4A- and ECAC-qualifying marks and 13 first-place finishes at the meets. At Penn Relays, the men’s distance medley relay team consisting of Tyler Fogarty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Jonathan Santana (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech), Nick Santos (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) and John Moore broke the school record and won the college section by hitting the tape in 9:43.15. Senior Fey Adaramola (Bronx, N.Y./Trevor) and Sheena Simpkins (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) each ran on the women’s 4x200-relay (1:39.32) and 4x400-relay (3:46:04) squads which established program standards. Fred Casimo (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) met the IC4A standard in the long jump by leaping 7.16m while Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, Puerto Rico/Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) and Will Anger (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta/SUNY Delhi) also qualified for the postseason meet in the men’s hammer throw, registering marks of 56.49m and 52.76m, respectively. At the Capital District Classic, Catie Coxon won the women’s discus throw by recording a personal-best toss of 47.93m. The mark ranks first on the conference performance list and 38th in the East Region. In addition, Stephen Hassard posted a career-best mark of 48.46m to win the men’s discus. Both student-athletes qualified for IC4As and ECACs. Albany dominated in all three women’s sprinting events. The squad registered the top six times in the 200m dash, produced the top five finishers in the 400m and took the top two spots in the 100m. Sandy Antenor (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) won the 100m in 12.98, Jessica Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y./Paul Robeson) hit the tape first in the 200m in 25.80 and Octavia Clarkson (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) was victorious in the 400m in 57.71. Albany also hosted the Friendship Meet against the University of Technology of Kingston, Jamaica on April 26.

Binghamton – Sophomore Michelle Eberhart (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) won the women’s triple jump, highlighting Binghamton’s showing at the Cornell Big Red Invitational on Sunday. Eberhart, who was second in the same event at the Bucknell 5-Way Meet last weekend, posted a winning jump of 11.32m on Sunday. In second place was junior teammate Nandi Dozier-Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter’s) with a leap of 10.97m. Also on the women’s side, junior Shannon Finnegan ( Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) was third in the 1,500 (4:46.89).On the men’s side, freshman Jason Santos (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) was third in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:44.83). Sophomore Cory Poepperling (Friendsville, Pa./Temple) was third in the pole vault (4.65m).

Boston U. – The Terrier women placed second at the Stonehill Invitational on April 24, capturing eight titles and setting four facility records. Freshman Lauren Berg (Derry, N.H.) led the women in the field, claiming two victories in the shot put (11.66m) and the javelin (39.22m). In the field, senior Fiona Romeri (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn.) also posted wins with Romeri placing first in the pole vault (3.20m) and Barwise beating out junior teammate Karly Neveu (Surrey, British Columbia) for the high jump title (1.70m). Barwise’s leap qualifies her for the ECACs. She also earned a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles. On the track, both junior Kathleen Davies (Huntingdon, Pa.) and senior Andrea Walkonen (Jaffrey, N.H.) set facility records to win the 1,500 (4:40.07) and 5,000m (16:06.01), respectively. Walkonen’s mark qualifies her for the ECAC championship in May and ranks her 15th in the nation and sixth in the East. Sophomore Jackie Dim (Sicklerville, N.J.) and junior Laura Martin (Tacoma, Wash.) also captured first-place finishes on the track, winning the 200m (24.38) and 100m (12.09), respectively, in ECAC-qualifying times. Dim is second in the conference standings. Martin earned another top finish at the meet, placing second behind Dim in the 200m. On the men’s side, junior Joel Senick (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) led the men to a third-place finish, posting a first-place finish in the 100m (11.15) and the 200m (21.89). Senick set a facility record in the 200m. Senior Mark Mazzochette (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Nicholas Kreutzjans (St. Louis, Mo.) also claimed titles at the meet, winning the 400m hurdles (55.49) and the long jump (5.94m), respectively.

Hartford – The Hawk squads competed at the Penn Relays on April 22-24. The men’s 4x800m relay team of sophomore Wayne Lawrence (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), freshmen Christopher Rodriquez (East Hartford, Conn./A.I. Prince Technical) and Robert Giuliani (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and graduate student Mike DuPaul (East Haven, Conn./East Haven/Connecticut) led Hartford, earning the Hawks’ top finish and shattering a school record. The 4x800m relay team placed 35th in a school-record time of 8:18.96. The men’s 4x400m relay team placed 48th out of 81 team with a time of 3:19.76. The team of DuPaul, sophomore Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) and juniors Christopher Carr (Stillwater, N.J./Kittatinny) and Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum), which placed third in its heat, beat out conference rivals UMBC and Hartford. On the women’s side, the 4x400m relay team of seniors Kaycee Martinez (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth Regional) and Ariana Bass (Penacook, N.H./Concord) and freshmen Nicole McClintock (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) and Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) raced to 67th place in a season-best time of 3:56.48.

Maine – The Black Bears competed at the Wildcat Invitational III on Saturday. Senior Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Fredericton) led the women’s squad with a pair of titles while freshman Jadrien Cousens (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) led the men with a second-place finish. Howatt won the 100m (12.36) and the 200m (24.93) while Cousens placed second in the high jump (1.97m). Sophomore Katherine McGoeghan (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) also claimed a pair of victories for the women, winning the 100m hurdles (15.31) and the high jump (1.62m). Freshman Daniel Roukey (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) captured another runner-up finish for the men, taking second in the 200m (22.78). The Black Bears also competed at the Penn Relays. Riley Masters placed second in the 5,000m with an IC4A-qualifying time of 14:25.91. The women’s 4x100m relay team of sophomores Shaniqua Burgess (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse), Jillian O’Brien (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) and Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and freshman Cearha Miller (Waldorf, Md./Oxon Hill) qualified for the ECAC championship, placing 35th in a school-record time of 46.71. Then on Saturday, the team of Burgess, O’Brien, Labreck and Miller raced in the women’s 4x200m relay and came in fourth in the ECAC division with a school-record time of 1:37.09.

UMBC – The Retrievers wrapped up their regular season at the Penn Relays on Saturday. Senior Victor Gilreath (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech/Maryland) finished seventh in the men’s triple jump (14.48m) while junior Martin Nevarez (Casa Grande, Ariz./Central Arizona College) placed 14th in the men’s pole vault, clearing a height of 4.45m. On the women’s side, the 4x100m relay team of junior Nicole Smalls (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert/Morgan State), freshman Ashley Ajayi (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton), sophomore Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) and senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) set a new school-record time of 47.40.
 
New Hampshire – The Wildcats hosted the third Wildcat Invitational and also competed in the Penn Relays in their final meets of the regular season. Junior Megan Donohue (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) led the women, claiming two titles. Donohue won the 400m hurdles (1:02.97) and led the Wildcats to a sweep of the top seven spots in the long jump. She placed first in the long jump with a mark of 5.59m. On the track, juniors Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia/Berkshire Prep School), Jennifer Racine (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Chelsey Canavan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) and sophomore Elizabeth Campbell (Colonia, N.J./Mt. St. Mary’s) also posted victories for the women. Letourneau won the 800m (2:10.73), Racine placed first in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:14.89), Canavan claimed the 400m title (57.39) and Campbell won the 5,000m in 17:42.91. Letourneau’s time in the 800m qualifies her for the ECAC championship and puts her atop the conference standings. In the field, junior Jasmin Washington (Waltham, Mass./Waltham Senior) claimed a title and led the Wildcats to a sweep of the top five spots in the triple jump. Washington won with a leap of 11.31m. On the men’s side, sophomore Max Hoddwells (Wayne, Maine/Maranacook) claimed the triple jump title (13.99m) and placed second in the 110m hurdles (15.20) to lead the Wildcats. In the field, juniors Michael Simon (Durham, Conn./Durham) and John Randall (Boscawen, N.H./Merrimack Valley) each claimed a victory and posted an IC4A-qualifying mark, placing first in the javelin throw (59.46m) and the hammer throw (53.80m), respectively. On the track, senior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and junior Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) tallied two more wins for the squad. Brehm won the 100m (10.81) while Macleod finished first in the 400m hurdles (54.29). Brehm’s time qualifies him for the IC4As in May. At the Penn Relays, senior Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y./Sherburne-Earlville) led the women while graduate student Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) led the men, each earning a top finish in their respective hammer throw events. Lathrop placed second with a mark of 53.57m while Kaste finished fifth with a throw of 56.77m.
 
Stony Brook – The Seawolves competed at the Penn Relays where juniors Lucy and Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) each claimed a title. Lucy won the 3,000m while Holly captured the 5,000m title. Both set school records with Lucy’s posting a time of 9:17.23 and Holly racing to first in 16:06.99. Lucy’s time puts her atop the national rankings while Holly’s ranks her just behind Boston U.’s Walkonen in 16th place. Senior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland/Loreto College Foxrock) also raced in the 5,000m, qualifying for the ECACs and posting a personal-best time of 16:54.18 to finish in 18th place. On the men’s side, seniors Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand/Victoria University) and Alex Felce (Stroud, England/Archway Comp.) both claimed top five finishes. Hodge finished fourth in the 10,000m with an IC4A-qualifying time of 29:45.86 while Felce came in third in the 3,000m steeplechase with an IC4A-qualifying time of 9:03.40. Hodge tops the conference standings in the event.
 
Vermont – The Catamounts sent competitors to the Penn Relays and the Wildcat Invitational last week. At the Penn Relays, senior Aaron Campbell (Bend, Ore./Summit) ran a season best 10.77 in a heat of the 100m. His time qualifies him for the IC4A championship in May. Campbell also ran the lead off leg for the 4x100m relay team that finished with a time of 42.89. At the Wildcat Invitational, freshman Bo Dunn (Harvard, Mass./Drake) and senior Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) won the women’s and men’s 1,500m, respectively. Dunn won the women’s event in 4:42.24 while Maisey placed first in 3:53.69. Senior Justin Scricca (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) earned another title for the men, taking first in the 200m (22.30) while classmate Eric Hill (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) won the 3,000m steeplechase (10:09.72). Sophomore Elyse Ogletree (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) garnered another top finish for the women, participating in her first meet of the season. Ogletree placed second in the javelin with a throw of 36.40m. Sophomore Jocelyn Ferland (Charlestown, N.H./Falls Mountain Regional) and junior Lindsey Guldin (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) captured two more top five finishes for the women in the field, coming in third in both the discus (35.66m) and the hammer throw (46.88m), respectively.
