CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The first-place Stony Brook Seawolves swept the weekly baseball awards for the period ending April 19. Junior third baseman Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y./Centereach) took home Player of the Week honors, sophomore right-hander Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) earned the Pitcher of the Week award, and freshman second baseman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario/York Mills Collegiate) garnered the award for top rookie.
Marino batted .500 for the week in a three-game weekend series against conference foe UMBC. In the series finale on Sunday, the junior went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and a career-high six RBI. Marino had two triples and double in the 22-1 win. He also scored two runs in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader. Marino registered a slugging percentage of .917, an on-base percentage of .571, six RBI, six runs scored and six hits for the series. Marino leads the first-place Seawolves in batting average (.336), hits (41) and doubles (9) this season.
Johnson hurled a three-hit, nine-inning shutout in his only appearance of the week, a 6-0 victory over UMBC on Saturday. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts, while walking just one. Johnson’s outing was his first complete game effort of the season. In conference starts this season, Johnson has a 1.69 ERA and is holding opponents to just a .148 batting average.
Tissenbaum provided depth to the Seawolves’ lineup over the weekend, batting .750 out of the eighth spot with an .875 slugging percentage and .750 on-base percentage. The rookie also drove in a run and came around to score five times. Tissenbaum crossed the plate at least once and recorded two hits in each game of the three-game series. He added a stolen base and a double in Saturday’s doubleheader. He’s batting .319 in 28 games this season, third on the team.

Albany (4-24, 3-3 AE) won two out of four last week, including a doubleheader sweep of America East Conference rival Hartford on Sunday… The Great Danes fell earlier in the week to Marist, 11-2, but came back for two sweeps of Hartford, 8-0 and 2-0, on Sunday, before dropping the finale to the Hawks, 7-5, in a back-and-forth contest… Junior right hander Dave Kubiak (Southold, N.Y./Southold) earned his second win of the season in the opener against Hartford, throwing his first complete game of the season… Kubiak scattered just five hits and struck out six in the effort, which was Albany’s first shutout win since the 2007 America East Championship victory over Binghamton… Lefty Ryan White (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also earned a win and a shared shutout in the nightcap win over Hartford… White threw seven and a third innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out seven opposing batters… Freshman Brian Bullard (West Nyack, N.Y./St. Joseph) paced the Great Dane offense, hitting .533 for the week with eight hits and five runs scored… Bullard also went 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts, and hit his third home run of the season in the series finale with Hartford… Senior centerfielder Brendan Rowland (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) hit .385 for the week, knocking out two doubles and striking out just once in 13 at bats… He also went 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts, including two in the series opener at Hartford… Freshman Nolan Gaige (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) recorded five hits on the week, while also making a start on the mound for the Great Danes… The Great Danes will return to action on Tuesday, meeting non-conference opponent Le Moyne at 4 p.m. at Varsity Field, before hosting a four-game America East Conference series with Stony Brook over the weekend.
Binghamton (12-17, 4-3 AE) went 3-2 during the week, beating Siena before splitting a four-game set against preseason favorite Maine… Junior No. 1 James Giulietti (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-JFK) pitched another complete-game gem to beat Maine in the opener. Giulietti scattered six hits, struck out six and walked none. He has 10 strikeouts, no walks and a 0.64 ERA in his first two starts against America East opponents – both victories… Senior second baseman Jim Calderone (Home Glen, Ill./Rice/Oakton CC) hit a team-best .529 during the week. Calderone had an on-base percentage of .619 and raised his season batting average to .391. He also played a role in five of BU’s six double plays in the Siena win, which was one shy of tying the NCAA Division I record (7). He also went 4-for-5 and scored three runs, including the game-winner, in the Bearcats’ wild come-from-behind 13-11 win over Maine on Sunday… Senior shortstop Jeff Abrams (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) had a strong series against Maine, hitting .467… Junior right fielder Peter Bregartner (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) hit .417 against the Black Bears and had a key two-out, two-run single that produced the winning runs in the series finale… Binghamton, picked to finish third in the Coaches’ Preseason Poll, has won 12 of the last 18 games against the Black Bears… Sophomore reliever Alex Adami (Thornwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) recorded the other win in the series, tossing two shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts… The Bearcats will host Marist in a non-conference game Tuesday before traveling to face UMBC in a three-game set this weekend. Binghamton leads the all-time series with the Retrievers 16-3.
Hartford (7-20, 2-5 AE) went 1-3 for the week, taking a 7-5 decision in the third game of its three-game set with Albany … Hartford started the week with a 19-2 loss at #25 Connecticut… Andy Drexel homered in the loss, his seventh of the season which left him tied with Corey Taylor of Binghamton for the America East lead… Hartford dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Albany on Sunday, 8-0 and 2-0 … The doubleheader was played Sunday due to a rainout on Saturday… Freshman Brian Rice pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in game two, helping to keep the game within striking distance for the Hawks, but they could not provide any run support… That changed on Monday in the series finale, when Mike Amendola and Bobby Gorski homered in the Hawks’ 7-5 victory over Albany… Gorski’s home run gave Hartford its two-run advantage in the bottom of the eighth inning… He had pitched out of an inherited jam in the top of the inning, so his home run gave himself the victory, his first of the season… Junior Rodger Wilmot’s RBI double had tied the score earlier in the eighth inning… Freshman Anthony Mannuccia started the game and gave up just one earned run in five innings of work… Junior Chris Greiner came out of the bullpen to earn his first save of the season.
The University of Maine baseball team (19-16, 4-3 AE) split a weekend series at Binghamton… Maine head coach Steve Trimper recorded his 300th career win on Sunday afternoon against Binghamton… Maine rookie pitcher Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season on Sunday against Binghamton… He leads the team in strikeouts with 55 on the season… Maine has had some impressive performances on the base paths this season… Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn./Montville) is a perfect 18-for-18, while rookie second baseman Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) is 14-of-14…. The Black Bears as a team have stolen 61 bases on the season, while only allowing 28… Lewis leads Maine with a team-high 15 multi-hit games on the season… Maine has been outscored 39-33 in the first inning of games this season, but has outscored its opponents 17-5 in the ninth inning… Maine has scored 52 runs in third inning this season…The Black Bears had a couple of impressive performances at the plate on Sunday… Senior Joe Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while rookie third baseman Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario/Notre Dame) went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI as well in the second game… Maine will host Bates College on Tuesday afternoon, before hosting Hartford in an America East series next weekend.
UMBC (7-21, 3-4 AE) dropped each of its four games this past week, including three at the hands of conference foe Stony Brook... Sophomore Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) continues to pace the lineup, hitting .348 with a team-high 34 hits... Junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) leads the Retrievers with seven doubles, three home runs and 20 RBI... With the bases loaded this season, UMBC is an outstanding .367 (11 for 30)... The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they play host to George Washington at 6 p.m. before hosting Binghamton in a three-game set Saturday and Sunday.
The Seawolves (14-16, 4-2 AE) swept a three-game series from UMBC over the weekend… The Seawolves out-scored the Retrievers, 33-1, in the three-game series… Sophomore Nick Tropeano pitched a four-hit shutout in the Stony Brook’s 5-0 win over UMBC on Saturday… He struck out nine in his 7.0 innings of work… Sophomore Tyler Johnson then hurled a three-hit shutout to lead SBU to a 6-0 win in Saturday’s second game… He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and tied a career high with 10 strike outs… SBU then tallied a season-high 31 hits in the 22-1 win in the series finale… The 22 runs tied a season-high… SBU scored five runs in the first inning, all with two outs… SBU then put the game away with nine runs in the fourth… Junior Stephen Marino led the SBU with four hits including two triples… he also tallied a career-best six RBI… Senior Rob Dyer added four hits and five RBI… Nine Stony Brook players recorded multiple-hits in the game … Freshman Adam Brown picked up the win with 5.0 shutout innings… The three-game series against the Retrievers was the Seawolves’ first home series after playing 26 of its first 27 games on the road… The Seawolves have out-scored their opponents 55-12 in their four home games this season… SBU hit a combined 11 doubles in the final two games of the series against UMBC including a season-high six in the victory on Sunday.
