CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Stony Brook University's Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) and University of Vermont's Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy) each led their respective teams to key conference wins in men's lacrosse action over the weekend to earn America East's weekly honors. McBride, who helped the Seawolves clinch their ninth straight America East Championship berth, was named the Player of the Week, while Philie, who put the Catamounts on the verge of their first tournament bid since 2003, took home Rookie of the Week honors. The awards for the week ending April 18 were announced Monday morning.
McBride, a junior attack, exploded for seven goals, including the game-winning score, to lead No. Stony Brook to a 17-16 come-from-behind win at Binghamton Saturday. With his team trailing 15-13 in the fourth quarter, McBride scored three times in game's final 10 minutes and broke a 16-16 tie with 2:56 remaining to ensure the Seawolves of a berth in the America East Championship. He ranks among national leaders and paces the league with 44 goals, netting 4.0 per game. This is McBride's fourth Player of the Week honor on the season.
Philie, a freshman attack, tallied eight points and picked up a ground ball in Vermont's 13-6 win over Hartford Saturday. The win gives Vermont multiple conference victories for the first time since 2005 and is on the verge of its first America East tournament bid since 2003. Also named Rookie of the Week on April 5, Phillie scored six goals, which equaled the Hawks' entire output, and added a pair of assists. Philie, who scored four of Vermont's six first-half goals, ranks fifth among league leaders with 38 points and fourth with 19 assists. His 19 scores are tied for ninth.
The America East playoff picture can become much clearer this weekend. Stony Brook can lock up at worst a share of the regular-season title with a win at Albany on Saturday at 7 p.m. on TW3. The Great Danes, UMBC, which downed Albany, 12-7, this past Saturday, and Vermont can all clinch tournament berths with wins this weekend. The Catamounts host the Retrievers on Saturday at 12 p.m., while Hartford and Binghamton will meet in West Hartford at 1 p.m. with the loser being eliminated from championship consideration.

Senior midfielder Andy Cook (Vestal, N.Y.) broke the Binghamton (3-9, AE 0-3) single-season record with 10 points in the Bearcats’ game against Stony Brook on Saturday. He scored a career-high six goals and tallied a career-best four assists. The old record of eight points was set by current senior attack Jeff Rurey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) against Lehigh back on March 30 … freshman attack Springer scored twice and tallied three assists in the Bearcats’ game against Stony Brook on Saturday. In his past five games, he is averaging 3.33 points per game. Springer continues to lead the Bearcats with 24 goals and 35 total points. With two games left to go in the regular season, Springer already has the third-highest, single-season goal total in program history. He is three goals away from tying the single-season record set by Phil Cavallo (in both 2003 and 2004). Furthermore, Springer’s 35 points this season currently ranks fourth in the program’s history. The single-season mark of 45 points was set by Matt McNamara in 2004 … junior midfielder Frank Donlon (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Comsewogue) recorded his third hat trick of the season with a three-goal effort in the Bearcats’ game against Stony Brook. He now has a career-best 18 goals this season and four hat tricks for his career … senior attack Jeff Rurey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) has a career-best 22 goals and 28 points so far this season … the 16 goals Binghamton scored against Stony Brook on Saturday ties the program record for most goals in a game. Binghamton had 16 goals against Hartford on April 1, 2006 . Furthermore, the 33 total goals in the Stony Brook game set the Bearcats Sports Complex facility record for the highest-scoring men’s lacrosse game. The previous record of 31 goals was set in Binghamton’s game against Lehigh back on March 30.
Hartford (3-9, AE 0-3) dropped a pair of decisions to #18/19 Fairfield on Tuesday and Vermont on Saturday … Hartford did not have an answer for a late barrage of fourth quarter goals and fell to Fairfield, 12-9, on the road in non-conference action on Tuesday … The Hawks trailed 2-1 at the half and were down by two entering the final stanza, but allowed the Stags to break the game open with five unanswered scores in the fourth … Sophomore Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern C.I/Univ. of Western Ontario) led all scorers with four points, including his sixth hat trick of the season … The attack joins just 16 other Division I lacrosse players who have notched three-goal games in five or more contests … The Hawks could not stop Vermont’s Drew Philie and Derek Lichtfuss who reeled off six and four goals, respectively, in the Catamounts’ 13-6 oust on Al-Marzook Field on Saturday … Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) and Kyle Goodchild (Toronto, Ontario/Courtice Secondary) led Hartford’s attack … Bender matched a career-best with four points including a pair of goals and two assists while Goodchild netted a career-best two goals … Vermont dominated the face-off X winning 13 of 21 duels and converted on 4 of 5 extra-man situations … Hartford capitalized on just 50-percent (3 of 6) of its man-up opportunities … Bender holds the 14th longest scoring streak in the nation at 25 games, recording 32 goals and 25 assists during the span … The Hawks will play their final home game of 2010 when they welcome the Binghamton Bearcats to West Hartford on Saturday, April 24 at 1 p.m. Hartford will honor its two seniors – Justin Bearse and Leif Abrahamson – prior to the start of the contest.
Senior attackman Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) scored a career-high six goals as host UMBC (3-7, AE 2-1) won its second consecutive game, a 12-7 victory over Albany (3-9, 2-1) at UMBC Stadium on April 17… Senior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added two goals and two assists for UMBC, while sophomore attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) had a goal and three helpers… … Latham scored all three Retriever goals in the second half and was credited with the game-winning goal… Latham’s six-goal effort was the most for a Retriever since Cayle Ratcliffe scored six vs. Penn on March 10, 2007… In his last 13 America East contests, Latham has 37 goals.... He now has 15 goals and 19 points in five career games vs. Albany… Freshman netminder Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School) evened his record at 3-3 on the season… In addition to his nine-save effort, he caused two turnovers and collected four ground balls… UMBC’s first-quarter save percentage was 35.6 entering the game, but Cohen made four saves as UMBC took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter… UMBC also got outstanding defensive work from senior long-stick midfielder Mike Camardo (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland), who caused six Albany turnovers, collected five ground balls and assisted on Grimm’s go-ahead man-down goal in the first quarter… Camardo has 32 CT’s on the season, which ties his single-season school record from a year ago… Junior face-off specialist J.D.
